Species of the Day: Sarawak Land Crab The Sarawak Land Crab, Lepidothelphusa cognetti, is listed as ‘Endangered’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM. These long-legged, black and white, semi-terrestrial crabs are endemic to Sarawak, East Malaysia, on the island of Borneo. So far, this species has only been found only in two locations, both associated with sandstone rocks, in western Sarawak on Mount Penrissen, and Bau, a gold mining town. Geographical range

The main threats to the Sarawak Land Crab are habitat loss and degradation, primarily as a result of logging. For example, much of the suitable habitat within its range around Mount Penrissen has recently been converted into a golf course and to cultivated land. An additional threat from deforestation is the resultant sedimentation of the streams in which it lives. The Sarawak Land Crab is not found in a protected area, and this raises questions about the long-term survival of this threatened and unique species.
