Academics – Eligibility Requirements All student-athletes must: Check with the student-athlete academic center staff before making course changes; Never drop a course without first consulting with the studentathlete academic center staff; If you require less than 12 hours to graduate in your final regular term of enrollment you must: Prior to the first day of class, have your academic department advisor provide to the student-athlete academic center staff verification that you need less than 12 hours to graduate that term; and
Never miss a class due to practice, training or promotional activities. Competition is the only permissible reason to miss a class.

Academics – Eligibility Requirements Repeats of previously passed courses cannot be counted toward hours required. The last grade attempted for a repeated course is the one that counts. You need to be aware of the number of elective hours allowed within your major. Excessive elective hours will not be counted in determining your eligibility. To be eligible for postseason competition occurring after the end of the semester you must pass at least 6 credit hours during the term immediately preceding the postseason competition.

Seasons of Eligibility - Exceptions Redshirt – May not compete at any time during the season You may participate in preseason exhibition contests or informal practice scrimmages without using a season of competition. For baseball, soccer, softball, women’s beach volleyball and women’s volleyball you may engage in outside competition during the non-championship segment without using a season of competition, provided you were academically eligible during the championship segment.

Financial Aid – Athletic Scholarships Minimum of one-year agreements May be maintained, reduced, cancelled or increased from one period of the award to the next Financial assistance other than from those to whom you are a legal dependent needs to be immediately reported to Michael Derringer via the Outside Scholarship Form. Student Assistance Fund (SAF) The fund shall be used to assist student-athletes in meeting financial needs that arise in conjunction with participation in intercollegiate athletics, enrollment in an academic curriculum or recognition of academic achievement. Student Host Don’t engage in: Hazing activities; Strip clubs/gentleman’s clubs, strippers, exotic dancers, prostitutes, escort services or any type of pornographic material; Gambling; or Conversations with boosters.
Don’t give (or loan) the recruit: Athletic gear or apparel to PSAs for use during an official visit; Cash or gifts; or Alcohol, tobacco products or illegal drugs.
Don’t: Transport the recruit more than 30 miles from campus; Report back information to a coach about the recruit’s athletics abilities revealed during any recreational activity occurring during the official visit.

Recruiting Prospective Student-Athletes You can only have off-campus in-person contact with a recruit if the contact does not occur at the direction of your coach or another Athletics Department staff member. Serving as a student host is an exception.
You can have written correspondence (e.g., e-mail, text message, communication via social media) with a recruit only if you weren’t told to do so or it is not paid for by your coach or any other Athletics Department staff member.

Voluntary Athletically Related Activities (VARA) To be considered “voluntary” and not count in your maximum practice/competition hours, the following conditions must be met: You must not be required to report back to a coach or other staff member (e.g. trainer, manager, strength coach); Noncoaching staff members who observe the activity may not report back to the coach any information related to the activity; The activity must be initiated and requested solely by you, the studentathlete (NOT required); Attendance and participation (or lack thereof) may not be recorded for the purpose of reporting attendance to the coach or teammates; You must not be subjected to penalty if you elect not to participate; No recognition or incentives can be given based on attendance or performance.

Time Management Plan (TMP) Coaches must create and distribute to student-athletes the TMP in writing prior to any RARA occurring A TMP for the semester and a monthly TMP will be distributed
Student-athletes must be provided adequate notice of changes to a previously established schedule for CARA or RARA At least 24 hours notice of a change for reasons within the coach’s control Changes for reasons outside of the coach’s control can be made with less than a 24 hour notice (e.g. weather, illness)

Each report must include a student-athlete’s approval! If you have any questions or concerns regarding your team’s countable hours (in-season or out-of-season) or voluntary activities, please contact Mike Gray.

Countable Athletically Related Activities – Approving CARA (Practice) Logs Go to www.uab.edu/blazernet and login Click on the Athletics tab. Click on JumpForward. Select the Practice Logs tab. A red circle indicates you have logs to submit. All logs that are under the "Outstanding Practice Logs" need to be reviewed. To sign off on practice logs, select the "Open" button on the right side of each week’s log. The top part of each log is a calendar of the week and lists all practices that your coach has logged for the
team. The bottom part of the practice log will be listed as the "Approval" section, and this is where you will answer several questions about the week’s practices. This is also where you will list whether you believe the week is correct or incorrect. Once you answer all questions, sign the log and select "Agree" or "Disagree.” When you select either one of these options this log will then be sent to Compliance. Users in the compliance department are the only people who can view these submitted logs.

Outside Competition During the academic year, student-athletes may not participate on any outside team in any noncollegiate amateur competition. Outside Competition You may receive awards (e.g., trophies, medals, and plaques), if the award(s) conform to the rules of the recognized amateur organization governing the competition (e.g., USGA, AAU, USTA). You may also accept prize money (or cash equivalents) from the sponsor of the event if the amount of money does not exceed your actual and necessary expenses to participate in the competition. Amateurism – Fee-for-Lesson You may receive compensation for teaching or coaching skills or techniques in your sport on a fee-for-lesson basis, provided you: Complete the Student-Athlete Fee-For-Lesson Form; Do not use institutional facilities; Do not provide a playing lesson; Do not receive payment from someone other than the recipient or the recipient’s family; AND Do not use your name, picture, or appearance to promote or advertise for the lessons.

Awards and Benefits – Complimentary Admissions 4 complimentary admissions per game via a pass list The recipient of the complimentary admission must present a photo ID at the pass gate. A student-athlete may not: Receive payment from any source for his or her complimentary admissions and may not exchange or assign them for any item of value to anyone, including teammates or other student-athletes; or Purchase tickets for a game and then scalp them for a profit.
The recipient of a complimentary admission may not sell or exchange the complimentary admissions for money or any item of value.

Awards and Benefits – Requesting Complimentary Admissions Go to www.uab.edu/blazernet and login. Click on Athletics. Click on JumpForward and the Comp. Ticket icon To submit a guest for approval, select the Add/View Guests option. You will be taken to the Add Guests page were you can fill out your guest’s information. All information with an asterisk is required information. You will then click the Add Person button at the bottom of the page. Compliance will review the information and either approve or deny the guest. You will receive a notification when the guest has been approved. To assign tickets for a specific game, find the game and select the "Assign Tickets" button.
To assign a ticket to a guest, select the guest you want to assign each ticket to from the dropdown. Once the guest is selected you will click yes in the Acknowledgement box (to ensure you read all the NCAA rules above), and then select submit. If you want to transfer a ticket to a teammate, check the “Transfer ticket” box rather than selecting an approved guest from the dropdown. The dropdown will then allow you to select a teammate. Changes can be made to the guest list as long as the event is still open. Each team will have a set deadline for requesting tickets after which no changes can be made.

Promotional Activities All promotional activities must be coordinated by your coach or an athletics administrator and require the approval of the Compliance Office and a completed Promotional Activities Form. All promotional activities are impermissible unless in accordance with NCAA Bylaw 12. Examples of permissible promotional activities are: Appearances with athletics administration members (i.e., ticket caravans, special events, press conferences, etc.); Fundraisers or promotions for charities, nonprofit organizations, or University programs; and Community service projects.

You are an ambassador of UAB and your actions will reflect upon your team, the Athletics Department and the University. You must compete with honesty and sportsmanship at all times.

Ethical Conduct – Sports Wagering You are ineligible if you participate in any gambling activity on intercollegiate, amateur or professional athletics in a sport for which the NCAA sponsors a championship. You lose all remaining eligibility immediately if you: Are involved in point shaving or other activities designed to influence the outcome or win-loss margin of a game, OR Solicit or accept a bet or participate in any gambling activity involving wagering on your institution.

Code of Conduct - Alcohol All student-athletes must comply with the state of Alabama’s alcohol-related criminal laws (e.g. no underage drinking and no driving under the influence of alcohol) and the University’s alcohol policy. Alcohol consumption is highly discouraged at all times for student-athletes of legal drinking age and is prohibited for all student-athletes (regardless of age) while in season. Alcohol abuse by all student-athletes is strictly prohibited and cause for disciplinary action by the head coach, sport administrator and/or Director of Athletics. In addition to University sanctions, the Department of Athletics may issue additional disciplinary actions on the student-athlete for violations of the University’s alcohol regulations and/or state laws.

Code of Conduct - Sportsmanship C-USA Sportsmanship Standards of Conduct Member institutions' student-athletes, coaches and staff shall conduct themselves in an appropriate manner in connection with all intercollegiate sporting events in which they participate ("Events"). They shall conduct themselves as positive role models and represent their institutions in a manner that exhibits the principles of sportsmanship. They shall exhibit respect and courtesy towards all participants, and comment about other institutions, coaches and studentathletes only in a positive manner.

Code of Conduct - Sportsmanship C-USA Sportsmanship Standards of Conduct Behavior that is not considered sportsmanlike or appropriate in connection with Events includes, but is not limited to, the following: Striking (e.g., kicking, hitting, throwing objects at) or other acts of violence, attempted acts of violence or attempts to incite violence; Obscene, profane, demeaning or unduly provocative language, gestures or actions directed towards an opposing team, institution, contest official, staff member or spectator; Public criticism of or publicly disparaging statements about an opposing team, institution, contest official, staff member, or spectator; All other actions, as determined by the Commissioner, in violation of the principles and standards of sportsmanship.

Code of Conduct - Hazing All forms of hazing are prohibited. Hazing is any activity expected of someone on a team (or group) that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers, regardless of the person’s willingness to participate. Examples of hazing include, but are not limited to: Forced consumption of alcohol or other substances, Sleep deprivation, Use of alcohol in drinking games or contests, Paddling, Forced tattooing or branding, Creation of excessive fatigue, Severe shocks or humiliation (as defined by a reasonable person under all circumstances), Compulsory servitude, and Theft or misuse of property belonging to others.

Code of Conduct – Social Media Student-athletes, as members of the UAB community, are permitted to use social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram provided that: No offensive or inappropriate pictures are posted, No offensive or inappropriate comments are posted, and Any information placed on the website(s) does not violate the ethics and intent behind the the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct.
Questions regarding acceptable content should be directed to your head coach, the Compliance Office, your sport administrator or the Director of Athletics. The University, including coaches and administrators, has the right to monitor these public websites.

Code of Conduct – Harassment, Assault and Discrimination All individuals associated with UAB athletics are expected to respect the dignity and sensitivity of all members of the community regardless of their age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, national origin, genetic or family history, or veteran status. NCAA Drug Testing YEAR ROUND TESTING OCCURS IN ALL SPORTS! If you test positive for a banned substance during an NCAA administered drug test you: Will be declared INELIGIBLE to compete during the regular season and postseason competition for ONE CALENDAR YEAR (i.e. 365 days) after your positive test (50% of the season for street drugs); and Will be charged with the loss of a minimum of one season of competition in all sports (50% of the season for street drugs).
If you test positive a second time for a banned substance during an NCAA administered drug test you will lose all remaining regular-season and post-season eligibility in all sports. Positive drug tests administered by another governing body (e.g., NGB, USADA) will also effect your eligibility and you are obligated to report those positive tests.

NCAA Drug Testing Check the 2017-18 NCAA Banned Drugs List Notify your Athletic Trainer of any medications or supplements you want to take and get his/her approval before taking them!

Beta-2-Agonists…includes Albuterol (a.k.a. Salbutamol) and some other Asthma medications
