Losing streak continues for Lady Vikings BY BARRY DELOACH It was a long week for the Humboldt Lady Vikings as they played four games in five days and three of those were District 14A losses. On Tuesday of last week, Humboldt traveled to Lake County and trailed by just five points at the half before losing by 15 points. Thursday night at Peabody, the Lady Vikes led by 10 points headed to the final eight minutes but were outscored 24-6 in the fourth and lost 46-38. Bradford jumped all over the Lady Vikes and never looked back in the 21-point victory over Humboldt. Then in game No. 4 of the week in front of a packed house, the Lady Vikings trailed by as many as 21 points to Haywood before losing 56-44 in a non-district game. Lake Co. 51 Lady Vikes 36 Humboldt lost by 24 points in their first encounter with Lake County and on a cold, cold night went to Tiptonville and played extremely well but still went home with a loss. Erika Wise, Chelsea Shivers, Aalaysheuna Perry, and Zarea Williams all got in on the scoring in the first quarter and the Lady Vikings trailed 13-10 after one period. In the second quarter, Perry and Wise popped 3-balls to keep Humboldt close. At the halftime horn, the Lady Vikes were down 25-20. Wise continued to shoot the ball well for Humboldt in the third as she scored six of the Lady Vikings eight points. Humboldt played well defensively in the second half but was outscored by four in the third period and six in the

Vikings win three district games, lose to undefeated Haywood Co. BY BARRY DELOACH It was a busy week for the Vikings with three big District 14A wins over Lake County (63-49), Trenton (65-25), and then on Friday night beat Bradford 63-42. The headliner of the week was the undefeated Haywood Tomcats at (21-0) in town for a rematch. The Tomcats beat the Vikings last time by 19 points but Treyvon Brown and Jaylen Montague were not at the game. In front of nearly 1,200 fans on Saturday night, the Vikes gave Haywood all they wanted in the first half as the Tomcats led 35-33 at the break. In the third period, the Tomcats outscored the Vikings 17-4 and rolled to a 64-47 win. With the loss, Humboldt’s record stands at 19-3 and 12-1 in district play. Vikings 63 Lake Co. 49 Back in December, the Vikings easily took care of the Falcons with a 17-point win at home. On Tuesday, it was a road game at Tiptonville. The game was close throughout. Humboldt led 13-12 at the end of one period and at the half 29-24. Stephon Turner and Brown led the way for Humboldt in the first half. Brown had 10 and Turner had nine points. In the third period, Lake County kept hanging around as DeSonta Bradford struggled offensively and had just six points through three periods. Turner continued his hot shooting with seven points in the third as the Vikes increased their lead to 43-37 after three quarters of action. In the fourth frame, Bradford finally got it going and scored nine points to finish the game with 15 points. Brown and Turner led Humboldt with 17 points each. Troy Agnew had a quiet 10 points as four Vikings were in double figures as they rolled to a 63-49 victory. Montague and Nick McLilly had two points each. Vikings 65 Trenton 25 A couple of weeks ago, Humboldt beat Trenton in a ho-hum kind of game by 16 points. Thursday at Peabody, the Vikes totally annihilated the Golden Tide. Humboldt jumped out to a 10-2 lead as McLilly, Turner and Bradford all scored. It was 11-4 at the end of the first quarter. In the second frame, Humboldt scored 26 points to only eight for the Golden Tide to lead 37-12 at the halftime buzzer. Bradford and Turner each had 10 at the break and Brown had 9 points. In the second half, the starters
stayed in until the last two minutes. When they exited the game, the Vikings were up 51-18. Coach Boykin got everyone in the game as the Vikes rolled up to victory No. 17 with a 65-25 win. The big three led Humboldt in scoring with Bradford at 16, Brown 13, Turner 12, Daylon Ballard eight, Christian Pipkin six, Agnew four, Kaylon Thomas three, McLilly two and Montague one. Vikings 63 Bradford 42 This time last year, Bradford upset Humboldt in their second meeting. The seniors were not going to let that happen on Senior Night as a big crowd as on hand. The Red Devils were a spirited bunch to begin the game and Humboldt did not have their first lead until Agnew hit two free throws at the end of the period to make it 11-9. Humboldt pushed the lead to six before the Red Devils made a run to take the lead at 16-15 with 3:54 left in the first half. The Vikes then threw it into high gear and closed the half with a 15-4 run and led 30-19 at the horn. A slam from Humboldt’s Bradford and then a trey from Turner were part of the big run for the Vikings. In the second half, the Vikings turned up the heat defensively and allowed the Red Devils just seven points in the third quarter. Humboldt got things rolling with a 7-0 run and their lead increased to 37-21. At the close of the period, Viking star, Bradford, spotted Turner on the wing and he popped a trey to make it 44-26 to end the quarter. The Vikes opened the fourth frame with a 10-2 run and the lead was 26 points. Coach Boykin started subbing freely. Qua Ingram had a big fourth period for Humboldt with six points as the Vikings rolled to a 63-42 win. Turner led with 20 points followed by Bradford with 14, Agnew 10, Ingram six, McLilly four, Ballard three, Pipkin three and Brown three. Haywood 63 Vikings 42 It was clash of the Titans on Saturday night in an overflow crowd as the No. 2 teams in Class 2A and 1A battled for nothing more than bragging rights. Haywood won the first game but Humboldt played without a full roster. By 6:30 p.m. the doors were closed due to the fire marshal saying the gym had too many folks on hand. It was a great atmosphere
for high school basketball as both teams put on quite a show. On Saturday night, the Tomcats jumped all over the Vikes in the first period. Haywood put up 25 on the Vikings to start the game and Humboldt had just 13. In the second period, the lead got as high as 15 points and it appeared that the Cats would run away with the game. With 2:07 left in the half, Montague hit a shot and Turner popped a big three. After a Haywood timeout, Humboldt came up with a steal and Agnew made it 35-27. Another turnover led to Turner hitting from beyond the arc again with 1:16 left in the half. Just before see VIKINGS page 8B
BY BARRY DELOACH The Humboldt Middle School girls and boys had one last hurrah before putting up the basketballs for 2014. On Saturday morning, both schools traveled to Medina to take place in the second annual Blue Suede Shoes Tournament to benefit the Carl Perkins Center. The Jr. Lady Vikings took on an undefeated White House team that was 16-0. Humboldt led the entire game until the fourth period and ended their season with a 24-17 loss to the Lady Patriots. The Jr. Vikings played next and lost to a 21-1 USJ team by 20 points. Patriots 24 Jr. Lady Vikes 17 The Lady Patriots came into the game with a perfect record and had won one game 90-10 over an opponent. Coach Ann Barnett never told her squad that information and did not need to as her team played inspired basketball the entire ball game. It was a very physical game and Humboldt came out on the better end of that as White House got into some early foul troubles. The Jr. Lady Vikes made it to the free throw line but struggled there. White House scored first but buckets from Cierra Williams and Beth Hicks gave Humboldt the lead. HMS went 0-4 from the line in the period and trailed by two headed to the second period. In the second, missed free throws once again hurt the Jr. Lady Vikings’ chance of increasing their lead. Humboldt went 3-of-6 to start the period and led 7-6 with 4:12 remaining in the half. After the Lady Patriots took a brief lead, Humboldt went back to the charity stripe and made two of four. Anya Patterson hit a runner in the paint and the Jr. Lady Vikings led 11-10 at the half.
