[email protected] Bradley Advances to MVC Semifinals After Shootout EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Bradley converted on all five of its tries to earn a 5-4 advantage in a penalty kick shootout against Evansville, sending the Braves to the semifinals of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Soccer Championship in dramatic fashion. The game officially ended as a 0-0 tie after neither team found the net after 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, Thursday at Black Beauty Field in Evansville. Both Bradley and Evansville connected on the first four tries of the shootout. Bradley junior Chris Cutshaw (Carmel, Ind./Carmel H.S.) was the fifth and final shooter for the Braves, sending a shot past Evansville goalkeeper Alec Dufty for a 5-4 advantage and placing the fate of the contest on Tyler Crawford, Evansville’s final shooter. Crawford’s drive hit the cross bar, allowing Bradley to advance to the tournament semifinals for the 11th straight season and 13th time overall. Sophomore Rudy Garcia (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame H.S.), junior Grant Campbell (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.), junior Travis English (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills H.S.), sophomore Paul Tracy (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley H.S.) and Cutshaw each scored for the Braves in the penalty kick shootout. The Braves got off to a fast start in the first half, putting pressure on Dufty and the Evansville defense after freshman Christian Meza’s (Carpentersville, Ill./Dundee-Crown H.S.) cross to Cutshaw was nearly sent into the net in the fifth minute. The Purple Aces had excellent chances as well, as Tom Irvin hit the post with his drive in the 13th minute. Evansville enjoyed a 14-7 advantage in shots during the first half. In the second half, the Aces hit the post again, this time on a shot from Crawford just 8:39 into the half. Evansville again held an advantage in shots, finishing regulation with a 24-13 edge. In the first overtime, both Bradley goalkeeper Drew Van Kampen (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley H.S.) and Dufty made a save to preserve the scoreless tie. Dufty made another stop in the second overtime, as the Braves held a 7-2 advantage in shots during the extra 20 minutes. Playing for the first time since Oct. 25 after battling illness, Van Kampen made a career-high 10 saves in the match, the most saves for a Bradley keeper since Chris Dunsheath turned aside 12 shots in a 1-1 tie against SMU on Nov. 16, 2003. Six of Van Kampen’s 10 stops came in the first 45 minutes of the match. The Braves will play top-seeded and second-ranked Creighton in the tournament semifinals Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Evansville. The Bluejays earned a 2-0 victory over the Braves earlier this season at Shea Stadium. The match marks the 11th consecutive trip to the tournament semifinals for Bradley and the fourth consecutive season the Braves and Bluejays have met in the league tournament. Third-seeded Missouri State will face second-seeded Drake in the day’s first match at 5 p.m.
