Oct 29, 2010 Funding Proposal for Sarvodaya Parivar Trust (SPT) 2010-2011 Executive Summary: 1. SPT continues to do excellent work for Adivasi (tribals) in the isolated hills of Dharampur, with over 95% adivasi population. 2. Asha has supported the project since 1996. 3. 497 adivasi children are studying at the two centers of Pindval & Khadaki. 369 of these children are residential students, living in the hostels of SPT. Total expenses are born by SPT for education, dorms, food, books, uniforms, health care etc of the residential students who come from very poor background. All expenses except evening meals & dorms are born by SPT for non-residential students. 4. SPT also conducts “zero class’ for students who live even in more remote areas. Local teachers are recruited to give basic education to pre-school children. Tutorials are given to older children as the schools in these remote areas have poor record of teaching. 5. SPT is collaborating with another NGO that gives education to Nomadic children. SPT pays the salaries of 6 teachers. 6. Following Capital Expenditures are needed:

8. SPT has been trying to increase the ratio of Girls/ boys ratio. It is not easy. As the demand for admission in SPT is very high, more than 5 to 6 than the vacancies, SPT has made a rule that only one child per family can be admitted. As sons still enjoy preference over daughters, many parents hold back admitting their daughter so that a younger brother may have a chance to get in the SPT School. SPT has steadily improved the ratio. This year for the first time, boys are only 51.6% of the total. That is a good achievement:

9. SPT was started by a group of 4 people over 40 years back. Last year, Harvilasben, the third pioneer of SPT passed away. Kantibhai, the renowned writer & thinker, is holding the fort from the original group now. SPT have inducted Ganeshbhai & Sujataben, dedicated Principals of schools at Pindval & Khadaki as Trustees to bring deserving young people to manage SPT in future. 10. Kantibhai believes that young people should volunteer for taking responsibilities of new projects at SPT. The needs of the community are very high. Even funds can be collected due to enormous goodwill & track record of SPT. However, it is the lack of young volunteers to take responsibility that holds back SPT from expanding its activities. 11. Pindval has bought 10 used PC to expose children to basic computer skills. They have recruited a local person who has some basic training on PC. I talked with the new teacher. He teaches typing, basic WORD & PAINT. He would welcome CD’s for teaching Maths, science, English or for just fun for kids. 12. Cattle raising & dairy have not been practiced by local tribals. They claim that local cows give very little milk & cows brought from outside do not survive heavy rains & cold climate of the hills. Milk is therefore a scarce commodity in the hills. Children in both schools get very small quantity of milk. Pindval has started a new project of Gowshala ( Cow shed). They have bought 8 cows of the famous Gir variety, along with a bull. The idea is to get milk for children as also expose them to how to take care of the cows.

13. Children were taken on a field trip to Daman, on the seashore. They also visited air force base, where they could see & touch planes & helicopters. That was quite an experience for the kids from the hills. 14. Kids from Khadaki have started campaign for cleanliness in the villages of Khadaki & Madhuri. They clean the villages once a month. Villagers & teachers also join in the cleaning campaign. They have placed 17 garbage cans in the villages where villagers place plastics waste. They have yet to figure out how to recycle plastic but are burying plastic in a pit. 15. SPT leads a major initiative for building check dams for water conservation & building stone barriers on the slopes of the hills for soil conservation. Local people donate their labor. SPT provides the technical & supervisory services. Farmers are too poor to work on these projects while not earning their daily wage. SPT gives them 9 lbs of grains for each cum ( 35 Cuft) of earth work they do. In this way, the families do not go hungry on the days that they volunteer for the community work. These initiatives have direct bearing on the income generation locally, enabling families to avoid going away to cities to work on construction projects. Children are thus able to stay in the villages & attend the school. 15.1 SPT plan to spend Rs 1.5 Million ($34,000) on grains for 900,000 Cuft of earth work for soil conservation. 15.2 SPT has already built 83 check dams in the past. 17 more check dams will be built this year, bringing the total to 100. On an average, one check dam costs about Rs 45,000 ($1025). The cost of grains for 17 new check dams & repair of 45 check dams will need Rs 1.1 Million ($25,000) 15.3 SPT grows saplings of fruit bearing trees & other hardy local species. 70,000 saplings will be distributed to 45 villages for planting. The total cost of the nursery is estimated at Rs 415, 000 ($9,500). 15.4 We believe that Asha should contribute towards the water & soil conservation projects, which have a huge impact on children’s education. However, as per last year’s discussion, some Asha volunteers felt that we should concentrate only on

the core education activities. We are therefore refraining from making any recommendation for contribution to these very valuable activities. We hope that Asha would look at the big picture of soil & water conservation as an integral part of community development & hence helping child development.

16. SPT operates a Khadi center. Tribals spin cotton at their home on the Ambar charakhas provided by SPT. Tribals get Rs 75/Kg of cotton spun. The whole family, including elderly people participates in spinning cotton, whenever they have time. Rs 1 million were received by tribals for spinning cotton in their homes. Further, SPT has installed several hand-looms at Pindval for use by tribals free of cost. Tribal families come to SPT & weave cloth. They are paid Rs 15/ sqm of cloth weaved. It is great to see families working in the Khadi center. SPT processes Khadi made by tribals to a marketable product. Almost all Khadi is bought by local people as it is inexpensive & suitable for rough use. 17. SPT received Rs 14.6 million from 1137 donors. 86.33% of the revenue went directly to Adivasis. Only 13.67% were spent on salary of teachers & staff, vehicle maintenance, maintenance & repairs of the schools & dorms, administration, depreciation etc. Trustees take no salary for 24 HR X 7 service of over last 40 years. This is an excellent ratio for any NGO. They are teaching an important lesson to children about simple living & high thinking. 18. We recommend that $31,300 be contributed by Asha for recurring expenses plus $ 2,000 for capital expense of Library.
