Congratulations to the Justice and Compassion Committee (JCC) for their great work in starting a weekend food program (known as the backpack program) for children in the day care center here at St. James. This program started with an idea in the winter and is now a fully functioning program that provides weekend meals for children who are in need, and usually get their breakfast and lunch at school, to take home. They started with a small program this summer and are now expanding it from every other week to every week this fall. Members of the JCC participating in this program are Dawn Butler, Trina Robinson, Jane Sielken, Sharon Nitz, Liz Siler and Roy Johnson. LIBRARY
READ A BOOK – FEED A CHILD The St. James Book-Shelf is now part of the St. James Backpack Food Program! We’ve upgraded from a cart to two bookcases and have designated the proceeds from book purchases to support our commitment to providing food for children who face food insecurity over the weekends when school and childcare meal programs are not available. There are two ways that you can participate: 1) Donate books in readable condition to the St. James Book-Shelf. If you enjoyed a book, someone else is likely to enjoy it, too. Please put your books in the Donation Crate. Mary Flores will track inventory and remove and recycle books that have languished too long on the shelves, unread. 2) Peruse the Book-Shelf when you are looking for something to read. Place a donation for the book(s) you select in the Shell Out and Share jar located on one of the bookcases. There are suggested donations, but the amount you contribute is up to you. The reading that feeds your mind and soul will now also help feed children. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Flores.

3 SUMMER PRODUCE
Another opportunity for sharing and caring – If you have an overabundance of produce from your garden, you can bring it to church on Sunday to share by putting it into the baskets in Parish Hall. Those who need produce can then take what you need and leave a monetary donation that will go to the highly successful backpack program. Please put your cash or check into the jars. If you write a check, please write them to “St James” and put “backpack funds” on the memo line. Cheryl will take any leftover produce to the Food Bank.
