This new Stability System is adaptable to virtually any aluminum or fiberglass boat. “We plan to offer it as an aftermarket kit that is designed for monohull outboard boats under 20 feet,” said Smith. Because it adds more than 400 pounds of buoyancy, the Stability System plays a vital role in achieving the U. S. Coast Guard requirement
for level flotation of a swamped boat and reduces heeled angles when passenger weight is on one side of the boat. At rest, the air collars are slightly above the waterline, but as soon as weight distribution inside the cockpit changes, they come in contact with the water and act as stabilizing outriggers, immediately increasing longitudinal and lateral stability; a significant
problem for many smaller narrow-beam boats. The Stability System increases the beam by one foot and only adds 40 pounds to the total weight of the boat. The system also maximizes interior space, allows for faster planing with smaller engines, and reduces operating costs through less fuel consumption and smaller, lighter, less costly engines to achieve equal performance. The new Stability System is not one-dimensional, however. An adaption of the aftermarket Stability System is also applicable for use as a permanent fender system for docks and hoists. This is especially beneficial for rental fleets. The expected retail production price of the Stability System, which is patentpending, starts at $595.
Solar-electric technology To demonstrate the utilitarian value of the Stability System, Smith married the KONA 15 Power Skiff with Torqeedo’s Cruise electric outboard and flexible thin film solar panels from PowerFilm. The result is a complete solar-electric rigid inflatable skiff that needs no fuel or oil changes, emits no

noise or fumes and will cruise for hours on a single charge. “With the advances in electric motor technology from a company like Torqeedo and the development of more efficient marine-grade thinfilm solar panels by PowerFilm, the reasons to own an electric-powered boat with enhanced stability are too numerous to ignore,” said Smith. A demonstration run from the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, to Avalon Harbor, Catalina Island, with a 15-foot KONA Rigid Inflatable Skiff, Torqeedo power and PowerFilm flexible solar panels is planned for July 2013.
