STATISTICAL ANALYSIS AND MATCH REVIEW
IRB NATIONS CUP 2014 COMMENTARY Four teams again participated in the competition, which was played in Romania for the eighth consecutive year and won by Emerging Ireland. The other teams were Romania, Uruguay and Russia. A relevant factor in assessing this year’s tournament is the make-up of the Emerging Ireland squad. None of the team were part of the 2013 Irish senior playing squad but all of their players played RaboDirect PRO12 rugby and all but two played for teams that participated in the Heineken Cup. Nevertheless, it was an internationally inexperienced team. The result in the Russia game, for example, was achieved with a team that had a total of 18 caps, whose average age was only 25 and where the oldest centre or wing was 23. It could be regarded therefore as Ireland’s third senior team, but it was a team which totally dominated the 2014 tournament. In winning all three matches they scored more points than the other three teams combined, averaging almost 50 points per game they conceded a total of only 13 points in three matches, an average of four points per game they scored 21 tries while conceding just one their margins of victory were 21, 48 and 66 with the latter margin being in a match that lasted just 46 minutes due to weather Emerging Ireland’s expansive approach to the game was illustrated in their match against Russia where their fast, open offloading game produced 10 tries, nine of which started from possession gained from inside their own half. Had the match continued for 80 minutes and the rate of scoring been maintained their final score could have reached between 110 and 120 points. When a tournament is dominated by one particular team to such an extent, it can give a distorted picture, especially in the area of scoring. Emerging Ireland, for example, conceded an average of 0.3 tries per game, while the other three teams conceded an average of 5.0 tries per game. In addition, one match – Emerging Ireland v Russia – was abandoned after 46 minutes due to extreme weather conditions, resulting in only five fully completed matches. The use of overall averages, therefore, especially in the area of scoring and build up to tries, can give an incomplete if not inaccurate picture in certain areas of the game. The report shows for example, that 10 or 32 per cent of tries came
IRB GAME ANALYSIS
PAGE 1
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS AND MATCH REVIEW from possession gained from inside the scoring team’s own half. A breakdown shows, however, that of the 10 tries, Emerging Ireland scored nine and the other three teams scored a total of just one. Nevertheless, in other areas the performance of all four teams are capable of being measured. These include kicks at goal, rate of success at the set pieces of lineout and scrum and penalties. These are referred to later in this commentary.

Adjustments have had to be made to the contents of this report to reflect the events that occurred in the Emerging Ireland v Russia match. The match was abandoned in the early part of the second half after a total of 46 minutes play so that the match comprised just half a game. In addition, the score at the time was 66-0 to Emerging Ireland with 47 points being scored in the last 22 minutes played. Had the match been completed, the final score may have remained at 66-0 or if the momentum of the game had continued, a victory by well over 100 points. Certain data therefore – such as that concerning averages per game, highest and lowest activities per game for example – need to be adjusted in order to produce a closer reflection of the shape of the game seen in this year’s competition. The report indicates where such adjustments have been made.
