Wednesday, October 15, 2014 Registration: 6:00 PM Meeting: 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM The Conference & Training Center at IU 13 1020 New Holland Avenue Lancaster, PA 17601 Cost: No Cost, but pre-registration is requested by October 13, 2014 Facilitator: Janice Estabrook, IU 13 Gifted Education and Enrichment Coordinator There’s a good bit of buzz about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) for our children, for our workforce, and our global economy. As parents of highly capable children, we want to do our best to guide them toward a strong educational experience that will allow them to be successful and happy as they pursue careers and future opportunities. How does STEM factor in to this? What experiences are beneficial to helping a child prosper in the future with STEM? Will taking challenging college prep courses be sufficient? How can you help your child to gain experience and exposure to STEM – even if s/he isn’t really interested? Why are girls and other segments of the population underrepresented in STEM? Why is it that some very bright and fully capable kids shy away from STEM? What can we do to engage more students in STEM? There is so much to talk about it! We look forward to sharing resources and information as well as to hearing your thoughts, questions, and ideas. Please join Colleen Smith an Outreach Coordinator for Penn State New Kensington and an active and enthusiastic member of STEM communities: Female Alliance for STEM Excellence (FASE), PA STEM Girls Collaborative Project, NW PA STEM, Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool and Youth Development Network (PSAYDN), AAUW, PA STEMx Network, and National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) Award for Aspirations in Computing. A strong promoter of STEM education, Colleen values equity and awareness of opportunity for girls and boys.
