Light Fat 1/4 or scrap In the final weeks before His cruci(6) 4-5/8” squares, cut once diagonally fixion, Jesus travelled the southern part of the province of Syria, an area of ungodly cities, inhabited by Gentiles. The Jews considered the Gentiles to be lower class and treated them no better than dogs. It is not know why Jesus chose to travel to the area. It is possible that he was seeking refuge, a quiet place where he would not be recognized, where he could prepare for the days to come. But Jesus’s reputation precedeed Him, and He was mobbed by people begging for healing and other miracles. At one point a woman (identified only as the Syro-Phoenician woman) called out to Jesus, asking Him to heal her daughter who was possessed by a demon (more than likely, she suffered from a mental health disorder). At first, Jesus ignored the woman, but she persisted. She continued to follow Jesus, begging and screaming for help. She made quite a scene, and the disciples suggested that Jesus should do something about the pest. While they stopped to confer, the woman threw herself at Jesus’s feet, and cried “’Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon.’” Matthew 15: 22. The New Oxford Annotated Bible Revised Standard Version. But Jesus refused, explaining that He would not help her because she was a Gentile, and he needed to save his healing for the Jews who believed, “’It is not fair to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.’” Matthew 15: 26. Again, the woman persisted, arguing that even dogs are allowed to eat the crumbs from the master’s table. Jesus realized that she had turned his teachings on him, and he responded, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” Matthew 15:28. True to His word, the woman returned home to find her daughter healed. We have two wonderful lessons from this story. First, the Syro-Phoenician woman teaches us that persistence pays off, and we should not give up when we are committed to finding a solution. The second lesson comes from the Great Teacher himself who looked beyond his prejudice to treat the Gentile with love and compassion, healing her daughter in the same way he would heal a Jew. Love, Toll free 877-239-3655 www.stitchintree.com compassion and charity should know no prejudice.
