stitching pandas The true story of Ruth Harkness inspires Girl Scout Daisies to stitch up some panda friends of their own. GET READY Materials: Panda lacing template; yarn; single hole punch; tape; black crayons; scissors for adult. You may wish to bring photos of pandas printed from the Internet or stuffed toy pandas for the girls to see. Preparation: Print out the panda lacing template onto cardstock, enough for each girl to have a copy. (Or print on regular paper and trace or photocopy onto cardstock.) Next, cut out each pattern, and using the single hole punch, create holes around the edge. S T E P 1 : Read The True Story of the Lady and the Black-and-White Bear Share with girls the inspiring true tale of Ruth Harkness using the par ticipation story provided. S T E P 2 : Sew Inspiring 1 Show the girls a picture of a panda and talk about which par ts of the panda’s face are black. Allow the girls to color their panda lacing cards to match the picture. 2 Give each girl a piece of yarn, long enough to stitch around the panda face. 3 Girls begin by threading the yarn through one of the holes, from the back to the front. Tape one end of the yarn to the back of the card to keep it from slipping through. 4 Guide the girls as they lace the yarn in and out of the holes, around the panda. 5 Tape the other end of the yarn to the back of the card after the final stitch. S T E P 3 : Share the Inspiration Invite the girls to take their panda friends home and share the inspiring story of Ruth Harkness with their families.
