Strength for Today, Bright Hope for Tomorrow

WELCOME FROM THE PRINCIPAL The St Lawrence Academy is an 11–16 academy which strives for academic excellence. Our distinctive and unique learning environment is based on our five core values of Truth, Forgiveness, Justice, Generosity and Respect. As Principal, I am privileged to have been given the opportunity to work with the academy staff and students at The St Lawrence Academy on the next stage of its journey. The academy must always be a place where students feel safe and have a real sense of belonging. Students need to grow the confidence to be creative and to express themselves. They must also be inspired and motivated so that they work hard and to realise their full potential. We value all our students and their learning experiences in the academy. I want learning and teaching in the academy to be enjoyable, creative, innovative and highly effective. Our dedicated and enthusiastic staff have high aspirations and challenging expectations of our students, and of the academic progress they need to make. We need parents and carers to work with us to ensure that students have the best chance to gain skills and qualifications at the best possible grades. We also want you to join us often to celebrate our students’ successes in the academy. Our students are our ambassadors and we will encourage them to take on leadership responsibilities and to get involved in student voice activities and community projects. Our students will also be our future leaders, who will help to shape and improve our community and the world around us. Therefore we are determined to help them be the best that they can possibly be!

Mike Adnitt, Principal

OUR ETHOS ‘A culture of inclusion’ • The Academy is inclusive and caters for the needs of all students. • The central importance of spirituality is the driving force for the Academy’s ethos, it inspires all that the Academy does – leadership, learning and personal development. • A whole child approach to education has been adopted so that every student is given opportunities to develop knowledge, skills and understanding through an open mind. • Our ethos is realised through personalising the curriculum and Academy experience for each student, responding to their learning needs by creating provision that is appropriate whether it is academic, personal, and social, moral or spiritual.

OUR VISION ‘Spiritual development through an open mind’ Placing spirituality and the spiritual development of everyone at the heart of the Academy is the central, distinctive contribution of the Church of England as sponsors of the Academy. The Academy strives to create a learning environment, curriculum, experiences and relationships in which the passion of all our students can find expression, be nourished and developed. Academically, the Academy seeks to bring coherence to both the Christian story and the story of other faiths in the community as resources for cultural understanding and personal growth. As an Academy we are committed to the values of: • Respect • Truth • Forgiveness • Generosity • Justice These values are used to determine the policies and practices of the Academy.

A SAFE AND SECURE ENVIRONMENT The Academy’s admission criteria ensure that students join from the local community irrespective of their ability or their beliefs. Students are placed in tutor and teaching groups according to their learning needs. A mentor is allocated to each student to support them to be healthy and safe, to enjoy and achieve, to make a positive contribution and to achieve economic wellbeing. We believe that the student body gains a sense of ownership for the organisation and daily life of the Academy when it is consulted and involved. This will be achieved by developing the Student Voice through a variety of opportunities.

WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP The Academy works in close collaboration with the local community, partner primary schools, other education providers and the Local Authority to provide the best learning environment for students and the local community. Parents are encouraged and supported to play a role in the life of the Academy. Family learning is offered as part of the wider community engagement strategy. Skills for life, English as a Second Language, ICT, dance and sport are the initial focus. The Academy builds on existing good practice, working with families through a range of activities such as The Sport Partnership.

ORGANISATION TO ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE The Academy is organised to give the students the support needed to achieve beyond expected levels. We both encourage and expect students to work at the pace appropriate for their ability and their progress is challenged by the setting of personal targets. All students are placed in tutor groups based on age and have between 25 and 30 students in each tutor group, with a tutor and associate tutor. In each year group there are five tutor groups led by an Achievement Team Leader. Every tutor group is a member of one of five houses (Emerald, Ruby, Turquoise, Gold and Amethyst) which meet for assemblies, enrichment activities and community events including sports and talent competitions. Student Services staff provide a reception facility for students who may need first aid, to hand in money for trips, replace an item of uniform or hand in medical letters. Student Voice activities and leadership activities are an important part of our vision. The students were involved in designing our logo, our uniform, our strapline and in selecting the names of the houses. They are involved in the student council, mentoring, prefects, our valued youth programme, staff interviews and in anti-bullying activities.

To ensure the Academy students have access to a broad curriculum, particularly in relation to the 14–19 agenda, the Academy is an active member of local partnership arrangements working with the Local Authority and other schools and colleges in Scunthorpe and the surrounding area.
