RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENT ATHLETES ● Every student who participates in a thletics must have a physical e xamination on file with the school. This must be signed by a PHYSICIAN, the student, a nd the student’s parent/guardian after April 1st for the next school year. ● Standards for a thletic e ligibility a re set up by the Indiana High School Athletic Association. The athlete should be a ware of the policies which a re posted on the a nnouncement board in the Athletic Director’s office. Although a school is governed by the state a ssociation, the school may a lso e stablish e ligibility requirements of it’s own. ● All a thletes a re students first a nd subject to the same rules a s other Paoli High School students. Please read a ll PHS policies in your student handbook. ● Athletes may not participate in a game or practice on a day when he/she has not been present for at least half of the school day, unless prearranged with the a dministration of the high school. (3 class periods) ● An a thlete has a definite responsibility to his teammates a nd his c oach. He/she should treat them with respect a nd be loyal a t a ll times. ● The a thlete has a definite responsibility to other a thletes to support them in their e fforts e ven though he may not be a member in a given sport. ● An a thlete is responsible for a ny e quipment issued to him or her. ● All e quipment, patches, or uniforms ordered from the a thletic department must be paid for BEFORE e quipments is issued to the a thlete. If the e quipment is lost, stolen, or damaged the athlete is still responsible for the payment. ● Athletes will be e xpected to travel with their team to a nd from a ll a way c ontest in school owned vehicles unless otherwise preapproved by the c oach AND the principal or AD. RULES FOR INDIVIDUALIZED SPORTS It is the responsibility of the varsity c oach to know a nd understand the specific IHSAA rules related to their sport. VARSITY PARTICIPATION AND LETTERING AWARDS 1. An a thlete will be e ligible to receive a participation c ertificate a t the e nd of e ach sport that the athlete finishes. To receive the c ertificate the a thlete has to be in good standing in that sport. 2. When a n a thlete meets the requirements for a letter in a c ertain sport, they will be given a gold pin of that sport. 3. When a n a thlete e arns their first varsity letter they c an purchase their letter jacket. Forms to order letter jackets c an be picked up in the a thletic office. When a n a thlete purchases the jacket they will receive the following: jacket with a gold c henille “ P”, their numerals (graduation year), a nd their last name. The numerals a nd last names will be the a thlete’s responsibility to get on the jacket. 4. If a n a thlete e arns 9 or more varsity letters a nd has paid for their letter jacket, the Paoli a thletic department will reimburse the a thlete for the purchase of their jacket. If a n a thlete e arns 9 or more letters a nd has not purchased a letter jacket, the Paoli a thletic department will purchase a jacket for that a thlete. For a n a thlete to be in “ Good Standing” in their sport, has to c omply with the following: 1. Meet a ll e ligibility requirements of the IHSAA a nd Paoli High School. 2. Attend a ll practice sessions unless sick or e xcused by the c oach of that particular sport. 3. Display proper c onduct a t a ll times toward other players, c oaches, officials, a nd teachers. 4. Present a n a ppearance a nd represent the team in such a manner to reflect c redit on the school, team, a nd the a thlete. 5. Must turn in a ll e quipment in a timely manner 6. Pay a ll a thletic debts to the school in a timely manner. VARSITY LETTERING REQUIREMENTS FOR INDIVIDUAL SPORTS 2
Baseball a player must play in 25% of the total innings with the e xception of pitchers (they will receive 2 ½ times e ach inning pitched) a nd be c ertified on sectional e ntry. Softball a player must play in 25% of the total innings with the e xception of pitchers (they will receive 2 ½ times e ach inning pitched) a nd be c ertified on sectional e ntry. Basketball (Boys/Girls) a player must participate in 40% of total quarters a nd be c ertified on sectional entry. Volleyball a player must participate in 50 % of a ll matches a nd be c ertified on sectional e ntry. Football a player must participate in 40% of the total quarters a nd be c ertified on sectional e ntry. Wrestling Golf (Boys/Girls) a player must play in 50% of a ll meets a nd be c ertified on sectional e ntry. Tennis (Boys/Girls) a player must participate in 50% of a ll matches a nd be c ertified on sectional entry. Track (Boys/Girls) a player must a verage 1 point per meet a nd be c ertified on sectional e ntry. Cross Country (Boys and Girls) a runner must a verage 3 points per meet a nd be c ertified on sectional e ntry. Points Method for Cross Country (Boys and Girls) Individual Meet Finish 1st = 10 pts. 2nd = 9 pts. 3rd = 8 pts. 4th = 7 pts. 5th = 6 pts. 6th = 5 pts. 7th = 4 pts. 8th = 3 pts. 9th = 2 pts. 10th = 1 pt.
Team Meet Finish 1st = 3 pts. 2nd = 2 ¾ pts. 3rd = 2 ½ pts. 4th = 2 ¼ pts. 5th = 2 pts. 6th = 1 ¾ pts. 7th = 1 ½ pts. 8th = 1 ¼ pts. 9th = ¾ pt. 10th ½ pt.
Hardship letters (grades 1012) This a pplies only if the a thlete has previously e arned a letter in that sport. This policy c annot be used for freshman who a re injured during the season. Any a thlete who is injured while participating or participating in a varsity sport, a nd who in the opinion of the c oach would have e arned his/her letter had they not been injured, may be c onsidered for a varsity letter a ward, The head c oach should bring this to the a ttention of the a thletic director/principal for approval. *Managers, stats, videotape, or other volunteer student workers will only receive c ertificates. They cannot e arn points towards a varsity letter jacket. 3
SPECIAL AWARDS GIVEN TO ATHLETES Patches Patches may be purchased by individuals or team members for: 1. Winning a sectional, regional, semistate, a nd state 2. Winning the c onference 3. Undefeated season 4. Being named a llconference in a sport. 5. Awards received in sports 6. State recognition honors 7. Orange Bowl (football) Team/Individual pictures Team/Individual pictures will be taken for high school teams a nd placed in the high school cafeteria Wall of Honor for: 1. A team wins the sectional. 2. A team is undefeated during the regular season. 3. Individuals making state finals a nd/or wins sectional or regional e vent. They must have a minimum of two matches in a dvancing to state meet or winning the sectional/ral. Individuals that a re named to AllConference will have their picture place on the wall outside the a thletic secretary's office for one c alendar year. Individuals will have a picture placed in the Wall of Fame section (across from the library) for the following: 1. Earning Academic AllState Honors 2. Earning AllState Honors through a c oaching a ssociation 3. Earning AP (associated press) AllState Honors Richard D. Finkel Mental Attitude Award (Presented in May) Any male in grades 912 who has participated in a thletics will be c onsidered. The criteria for selection shall c onsist of the following: Mental a ttitude (40%), Athletic a chievement (25%), Leadership (20%), a nd Scholarship (15%). Senior Top 10% Award (Presented in May) 4
Any senior a thlete in the Top 10 % of the c lass a nd participated in 2 sports during their senior year will receive this a wards. Awards winners will receive a c ertificate a nd a n Athletic Scholar Patch
