inquiry: Making the System Better

Your Task You are a member of a team of recycling consultants. Your job is to find out how effectively your school is helping to reuse and recycle electronics. Your task is to assess: Ê

UÊ/…iÊ«…ÞÈV>ÊÃÞÃÌi“ÊqÊ̅iÊëiVˆwVʓiV…>˜ˆÃ“ÃÊÕÃi`Ê̜ÊVœiVÌ] sort and deliver electronics to authorized recyclers.

As a result of this assessment, you will design a reuse or recycling system to ensure that students can safely and responsibly reuse or recycle their e-waste.

Lesson 2 inquiry: Making the System Better

Research Your Recycling System With the assistance of your custodian, trace all the steps taken in the recycling system in the school. If the school does not recycle electronics on a regular basis, use the recycling system it does have as a model for you to design an electronics recycling system. Use a Consequence Map to record your findings. Step 1: Write in one of the sub-systems on the left side. Step 2: Describe what is supposed to happen in a perfect world in the top box. Step 3: Write what actually happens in the bottom box. Step 4: Write some reasons why the things that are supposed to happen, do not happen.

Critical Thinking Develop and conduct a survey to assess attitudes towards end of life electronics recycling. Ê

Develop a survey to poll student attitudes: SAMPLE QUESTIONS: Do you recycle your own out-of-use electronics? Yes

No

If not, why not? (Check all that apply) I don’t know what to do with them I haven’t gotten around to disposing of them I am holding on to them to give them to someone who might use them They cost me a lot of money back when I bought them, and I have a hard time letting go of them I’m too lazy to learn how to recycle them and take action Other: What would motivate you to recycle your electronics? (check all that apply) Not having clutter around the house Preserving safe and clean environment for the next generations Having a clean and safe environment (nature, lakes, etc.) I can enjoy Not having potentially harmful materials going to developing countries Reducing the effects of the climate change

Design Reflection Answer the following questions using complete sentences.

1. Describe how your improved recycling system will be used.

2. Describe how using your improved recycling system will affect your lifestyle.

3. How will your recycling system ensure that all electronics are reused or recycled?

4. How will your recycling system be environmentally friendly?

5. Write an advertisement for your recycling system. Convince us about the advantages of your system and the reasons we MUST use it.

6. What will be the difficulties of actually building this system?

7. If you were to do this project again, what would you do differently?
