Top Seeded Southeast Michigan Captures the 14 & Under Midwest Cup! The USTA/Midwest Section 14 & Under District Team Cup event started in 2005. Teams are comprised of the best 14-andunder junior players who are selected to participate based on their ranking, tournament play, character, and sportsmanship from each of the Section’s 14 Districts. For the third year, the competition returned to Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana where our top seeded Southeastern Michigan Team advanced to the semifinals with convincing victories over N. Michigan (9-0), N.E. Ohio (8-1), and N. Illinois (9-0). In the semi-finals, SEMTA faced off against 4th seeded Wisconsin. Our team swept the doubles, and ended up with an 8-1 victory. In the championship match, SEMTA played the 2nd seeded team from Ohio Valley. After winning 2 of the 3 doubles matches, SEMTA captured 5 of 6 singles matches, and rolled to a 7-2 win. It was a dominating performance from start to finish by an outstanding team: Michael Dube, Maximilian Fliegner, Brett Forman, Jack Murray, Lexi Baylis, Mary Hanna, Joy Jankowski and Alexandria Najarian. Each team member received a first place medal to serve as a reminder of their accomplishment and the travelling trophy now reads: “2010 Champions—Southeast Michigan.” Congratulations!

12&U SOUTHEASTERN MICHIGAN JUNIOR CUP TEAM by Kelley Hice, Coach A strong group of Southeast Michigan’s best 12 & under players participated in the MidwestthCup Team Championship June 18-20 in Greenwood, Indiana. The team consisted of Chris Adams, Franklin Brozovich, Kathryn Dunleavy, Mary Beth Hurley, Connor Johnston, Christina Jordon, Noah Karoub, Isabella Spindler and Coach Kelley Hice. With family, the entourage included almost thirty people. The first two days of competition included victories over Nothwest Ohio, Northern Illinois, Northern Indiana and Southeast Michigan’s 2010 12 & U Cup Team. Northeastern Michigan. The third day saw close matches that ended up being tight losses to Chicago and then Central Indiana. The team’s fourth place finish was right where we were seeded. The kids bonded well and really seemed to enjoy the trip. We all felt the thrill of victory as well as the agony of defeat. The parents and siblings had fun too, making the weekend even more enjoyable. Team and personal goals were met. I hope the participants get a chance to represent our district again.
To be considered for the 2011 Southeast Michigan Cup Teams, sign up on TennisLink by May 31, 2011.
Team selection process includes Midwest Standing List position (in team age division) at time of deadline, Code Violations and Sportsmanship.
18&U BOYS’ SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN JUNIOR CUP TEAM The USTA/Midwest Section Boys’ 18 District Team Cup (formerly Junior Davis Cup) event started in 1949. The Boys’ 18s District Team Cup Competition returned to Western Michigan University Sorensen Courts in Kalamazoo, Mich., for the fourth straight year. One of the Section’s 14 Districts who participates in the annual event, this year’s Southeast Michigan team members were: Hunter Bielfield, Edward Covalschi, Joseph Dube, Graham Gettel, Aurko Joshi, Jay Joshi, Trey Keating, Jeffrey Loduca, Joseph Sheena and Douglas Zade. “Competing in Kalamazoo, the Southeast Michigan boys started slowly with a 7-0 loss to Chicago (the #2 seed) in the morning”. Concedes Chris Shaya, SEMTA Coach. “They quickly rebounded with a 6-1 upset of the #7 seed Northeast Michigan in the afternoon and a 6-1 win over Southern Illinois the following morning. That afternoon, SEMTA narrowly missed upsetting the #3 Wisconsin 4-3 for a spot in the semifinal. On the final day, SEMTA once again faced a formidable opponent losing in a close match to Northeast Ohio 5-2. Both coach [Paco] Trinidad and I felt all players represented SEMTA well with their play as well as their behavior on the court.“ Ohio Valley won the Boys' 18 event, defeating Chicago in the Southeast Michigan’s 18 & U Boys’ Cup Team. finals. 18&U GIRLS’ MARIAN WOOD BAIRD CUP TEAM The USTA/Midwest Section Marian Wood Baird Cup (formerly The Junior Wightman Cup) event began in 1950, and was held for the first time at the University of Illinois Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, Illinois. Teams are comprised of the best 18-and-under girls from each of the Section’s 14 Districts who participate in the annual event. "SEMTA’s team was represented by the following talented players: Katie Brozovich, Christina Colarossi, Natasha Dabrowski, Kelsey Geppner, Amabel Karoub, Gabriella Spindler, and Alix Thurman. The weather cooperated throughout the weekend even though we woke up to a tornado warning the first day, which delayed the start of the competition by a couple of hours. It was wonderful to see how the team managed to have a great time despite the tough match schedule, scorching sun, and fatigue. Congratulations to the girls for being such fighters and for putting a great effort on the tennis courts finishing with a two and three record. The coaches, officials and organizers want to congratulate all of the tournament participants for the great sportsmanship observed throughout the event. It was a pleasure to work with such a great group of young ladies. Thank you team, for another great experience!!!

Southeast Michigan’s Equipment Recycling Program: PROVIDING GENTLY USED RACQUETS, NETS AND QUICKSTART EQUIPMENT TO BENEFIT CLARK PARK COMMUNITY TENNIS
The Southeast Michigan District Office has been collecting previously used tennis racquets, nets and equipment to help support tennis in our communities. Balls used at our Jr. Qualifier and Adult League Championships along with donated racquets and equipment made their way to CLARK PARK. The Clark Park Recreation Center has been serving the Southeast Detroit community for over a century. In 1991, the Clark Park Coalition, a grassroots nonprofit emerged to partner with the City of Detroit Recreation Department to help keep the Clark Park Rec Center doors open year-round for the youth and primarily Hispanic community. With the help of community volunteers and a small staff provided through the Coalition, the Clark Park Recreation Center is able to provide quality recreational programs including tennis to more than 100 youth on a daily basis. The goal is to provide a fun, safe, extended family atmosphere where the youth learn invaluable life lessons and skills including being the stewards of their community park and Center. At a recent visit to Clark Park class participants listen to coach Richard Billings as he describes Clark Park, the dedication of Ray Murry, Miriam ?? and Richard Billings was appar- what they are going to do in tennis class. ent and the excitement of the children and pride of the parents could not be matched. (Their current need is a simple backboard for those who’d like more practice after the tennis programs. If you’d like to help, please let us know.)
If you have any used tennis racquets or equipment that you would like to Page 10

Volunteers introduce tennis to hundreds of local youth on Belle Isle! The idea for Metro Detroit Youth Day, the largest youth event in Michigan, came following altercations between youth and Detroit merchants in the summer of 1980. Originally intended to help foster goodwill and harmony, Youth Day was expanded to include youth guidance, mentors, role models, entertainment and local celebrities; awarding over 54 college scholarships to graduating seniors and honoring dozens of high school students for academic achievement and community service. And that’s before 11am! The rest of the day, participants are encouraged to attend various sports clinics and enjoy a free lunch, compliments of the Michigan Food and Beverage Association. Seven years ago, we offered to coordinate a tennis clinic held on Belle Isle’s 10 courts. While getting all the equipment ready for Metro Detroit Youth Day is no easy task, finding volunteers to help is no longer a problem. It takes approximately 50 volunteers to man every aspect of the event, and this year we had a record number of people come forward offering to help. Thank you to John Adams, Carole & Nathan Albanelli, Jay Anderson, Ted Berkowski, Sherry Bock, Henry Brophy, Craig Bunge, Jerry Butler, Gina Carter, Vicky & Stephanie Clough, Matt Clune, David Cook, Patrick Dietz, Jim Fleming, Aundra Freeman, Max Galvin, Dan & Thomas Garberding, Alex & Colden Gosselin, Mike Graff, Kelley Hice, Uma Jasty, Phyllis Johnson, Weston Kalogeridis, Christian Mackey, Kayla Manown, Mark Miller, Alex Padilla, Will Quinn, Scott Ransome, Maurice Sanders, Sue Selke, Burrell Shields, Brandon Smith, Gerard Smith, Ben Tasich, Connor Tily, Anna Urso, Rick Waldorf, David Warren, Claude & Lauren Wilcox, Patti & John Willard, Jr., Wes Williams, Ken Wilson, David & Julie Wittwer. Your help was immeasurable!
