SUMMER LEARNING SPELLS SUCCESS FOR OUR STUDENTS! During the summer months, children from low income families lose more than two months of reading achievement, whereas their middle income peers continue to make literacy gains. By the end of 5th grade, this creates a two and a half to three year learning gap that continues to widen. Students who are not proficient readers by 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school. High school dropouts cost taxpayers between $320-350 billion a year in lost wages, taxable income, health care, welfare and incarceration costs.
2017 RESULTS: • • • •
Over 1,000 K-3rd graders were served across eight sites in Maricopa County Each program received at least 50 Hours of literacy coaching by a certified teacher At the end of the summer program, staff reported feeling confident in making literacy fun Rather than losing two months, the average participant gained more than three months of reading achievement

SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAMS CLOSE THE GAP Since 2013, Valley of the Sun United Way has been able to bring together summer out-of-school time programs to the table to tackle summer learning, providing each summer program site with a certified K-3rd grade teacher who empowers summer staff to embed literacy into their current summer programs through modeling and coaching. We provide each program site with a minimum of 16 hours of training and over $500 in literacy materials.
“This year was just a really great year! Thank you for this opportunity! We are certain if we did not offer the Summer Learning Collabortive many of our children would not have a chance of any hope to return to school post summer either at or above where they left off. We know many of them would be in a failing position. This program allows kids to have hope and a chance! Thank you.” - Summer Program Site Director
