2017 Summer Youth Enrichment Registration Information Registration
Registration begins February 28. Forms cannot be accepted prior to this date! Complete the registration form, attach separate checks for each course and mail or deliver to the address below. Registration forms will be processed in the order received. Confirmations will be mailed within ten business days of receipt of the form and payment.
Cancellations/Refunds
Cancellations will be accepted until April 14. The course fee will be refunded, less a $15 cancellation fee per course, per student. After April 14, course fees are non-refundable and cannot be transferred to another student.
Maximum / Minimum Enrollments
Space is limited in all courses and wait lists are formed as necessary. Courses operate on a self-supporting basis and require a minimum enrollment in order to run. We’re not clowning around! Anyone can be an artist. Students just have to find their medium! The purpose of Balloon Art & Sculpture is to introduce young people to the art of balloon twisting. The week will start with learning basic techniques and basic designs. Students also learn design techniques from other balloon artists and how to use different sizes and shapes of balloons to create a variety of designs. Students work together to create larger displays and create their own original designs. Students should bring a nutritious snack each day. Wearable Art
Course Fee, $95 Grades, Rising 3-8
Create fun, funky, beautiful or wacky (it’s up to each artist!) costumes, shirts, hats, vests, belts, bandanas and a pouch. Using thrift store clothes as a beginning, students alter and embellish their outfits using stencils, foam prints and stamps as well as flat and dimensional fabric paints. Students also weave a belt, a pouch and a bracelet or armband. Students should bring a smock and a nutritious snack each day. The Wild & Wonderful World of Watercolor & Acrylics
Course Fee, $95 Grades, Rising 4-8
Students learn a multitude of different art from pet portraits, seascapes, a summer flower, still-life, outdoor painting from nature (“pleinair” painting), life-size self portraits, painting from dreams, and an abstract painting from their inner world! Students experiment with many different techniques using watercolors (with wet-on-wet, dry brush and splatter painting), and acrylics (with impasto, palette knife, layering and color mixing) to discover their own individual painting styles and to create unique and personal paintings. Fantastic, Magical & Brilliant Portraits

Self portraits, best friend portraits, animal portraits, book character portraits, imaginary portraits - students study many different kinds of faces and use pencils, charcoal, pastels, watercolor, acrylics and collage to create one-of-a-kind portraits and to capture the special essence of the animals and people they love. Students also look at realistic, abstract and impressionistic portraits for inspiration. A fun class for everyone who loves to draw faces! CLIMB Aboard for a week of Creating, Learning, Inventing, Making and Building. Students get the opportunity to invent their own board game, build a paper bridge and see how much weight it can hold, make their own chalk, learn how to sew a monster doll, and create their own drawing of a 3D hand! Join us for one week of creative, artistic and fun activities that anyone with a great imagination and a love for art will enjoy. Please bring a nutritious snack each day. Do you like to read as well as craft? If so, this will be the perfect camp for you. Each day students read a fun and thought provoking story, then create a craft based on the story. Join us for one week of story time, artistic and fun activities. Students should bring their creative minds, as well as a smock or an old shirt and a nutritious snack each day. Course #11: June 19 to June 23 • 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Instructor: Stefanie Kotzen Location: Chapel Hill High Using familiar books and cross-curricular literature as Mentor Text, students explore Idea Development; find their “Voice” in their writing, word choice, and a touch of creative style. Students enhance their writing abilities and build new skills while resurfacing their love of writing. Corbett Harrison and Kelly Gallagher will be the project managers for the construction of this Writing Dream. Relevant technology aids in the expansion of the writing process. Students spend the week writing and revising their stories and to create three unique books with collage, watercolor, pop-up elements, stamps, markers and colored pencils. Students should bring three old hardback books to cut and alter for their stories and one story that has already been written. Sports Journalism

Explore the field of sports journalism! Students analyze game broadcasts, studio shows, podcasts, opinion articles, and photography. They learn specific journalism skills, including interview techniques, feature writing, page design, and photography composition. Students develop their own writing about the sports they are passionate about and work with peers and a long-time newspaper advisor to improve their products. Digital Design/Photography with Yearbook

Students work collaboratively by using technology such as digital cameras, photo editing software, and an online design software to learn how to digitally produce a yearbook. Students use writing skills, communication skills and creativity to learn how to effectively tell the story of a school community and peers in an engaging way. This course gets students ready to join the Yearbook Club at their school. Students get to interact with local professionals such as visual and design editors and photographers. Basketball Basics

Basketball Basics is a program for students with a love for the game of basketball. The focus is on the fundamentals, including passing, shooting, ball handling, defense and rebounding. Skills are taught and reinforced with fun drills, stations and simulated games. At the end of the session, each student receives an acknowledgment of their participation and newly acquired skills. Students should wear gym shoes and bring a towel, a nutritious snack and a water bottle. Tennis Time

Come learn the game of tennis! This course is appropriate for both beginners and those with some experience. Students learn proper techniques for hitting forehand and backhand ground strokes, volleys, serves and overheads. Students improve their games with individual drills and group activities, play some tennis matches, learn score-keeping and strategies. Team Spirit (2-week course)

Students learn individual cheer skills, basic tumbling, partner stunts, spirit cheers and TEAMWORK. Each participant has visual demonstrations and receives hands-on practice. Students work together using all their skills to create an outstanding end-of-course performance. Families are encouraged to visit at the end of the week to see what the students have learned. Do you have a favorite t-shirt, fabric or pair of jeans that are too small or too special to give away? Try repurposing it into something useful. Campers who are interested in learning the basics of sewing will love this class. Students sew each day and learn different sewing techniques. Do you love arts and crafts? Do you want to try sewing on a machine with guidance? Come design and create a pillow, small wall hanging or lap quilt by letting your creativity be your guide. Students design, piece, quilt and bind their art object using machine quilting. Students should bring a nutritious snack and a water bottle. Camp Pinterest

This is the perfect opportunity to try all those ideas students have pinned but haven’t had the time to try out. Students make craft projects, at home spa treatments, and more. Some of the crafts include lip gloss creation, inspirational wall art, a confetti bowl, tie dye, and mod podge. Students should bring their imagination and learn to create fun art. Students should bring a t-shirt or other cloth for tie dying and a pie or cake pan. Please bring a smock or an old shirt and a nutritious snack each day. Cook like a chef in this culinary arts cooking camp. In this class students learn basic knife skills, advanced cooking methods and procedures, food plating and learn the importance of teamwork when creating an edible masterpiece. This is a hands-on cooking class. For this camp, students need to have closed toed shoes and a bib style apron. Course #30: July 10 to July 14 • 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Instructor: Sara Wilson Location: Chapel Hill High Course #31: July 17 to July 21 • 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Cook like a chef and continue a student’s exploration of international cooking. Students explore advanced cooking, plating and garnishing techniques. Students learn advanced knife skills, baking and production. This is a hands-on cooking class. For this camp, students need to have closed toed shoes, a bib style apron and highly recommended, but not required, digital thermometer. Jewelry Design Workshop

Do you love jewelry and have a creative mind for design? If so this could be the perfect opportunity to create your own piece of art to wear. Students create several projects designed to give the beginner experience with the use of jeweler’s hand tools and metal manipulations. Students learn to make earrings and bracelets, and create a beaded necklace. Please bring any of your favorite beads or pendants you may want to incorporate into your designs. This class is an introduction to basic sewing projects and cooking techniques. Hands-on projects include a drawstring backpack and many fun cooking labs!. Basic sewing skills are mastered using both hand and machine methods. Get hungry for mouth watering Belgian waffles, blueberry muffins, monkey bread, and pizza pull-aparts! This class emphasizes math and literacy skills. Open-toed shoes are prohibited. Students learn to greet one another, introduce themselves and family members in Chinese, count numbers and sing some Chinese songs while dancing. Students also have the opportunities to learn about Chinese culture through various Chinese craft activities and have fun with making Chinese food by using playdoh. Parents are invited on the last day to see all that the students have learned and to share some store-bought Chinese dumplings. Please bring a nutritious snack each day. Being a Teen 101
