Acts 12:23 “Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.”

Grudem, Wayne. Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine. Zondervan: Grand Rapids, MI, 1994, 397-409.

Angels sometimes carry out God’s judgments (2 Samuel 24:16-17; 2 Chronicles 32:21; Acts 12:23; I Cor. 10:10; Rev. 16:1).

Angels are messengers from God (Luke 1:11-19; Acts 8:26; 10:3-8, 22; 27:23-24). Angels protect us (Daniel 6:22; Matthew 4:11; Acts 5:19-20; 12:7-11).

Psalm 91:11-12 “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” 

Although angels guard and protect us, there is no convincing support for the idea of individual guardian angels in the Bible (some people use Matthew 18:10 or Acts 12:15 to support this view, but this is not convincing).

Angels can sometimes take human form, making ‘inspection visits’ (Heb. 13:2; Gen. 18:2-5; 19:1-3).

Hebrews 13:2 “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.” GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

LESSON THREE ANGELS

 

What Angels Are

 

Angels are created, spiritual beings with moral judgment and high intelligence, but without physical bodies. 

WLC #16 – How did God create angels? God created all the angels, spirits, immortal, holy, excelling in knowledge, mighty in power, to execute His commandments, and to praise His name, yet subject to change.

 

Angels were created by God (Neh. 9:6; Psalm 148:2, 5; Col. 1:16). Colossians 1:16 “For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him.”

 

Sons of God (Job 1:6; 2:1) Holy Ones (Psalm 89:5,7) Spirits (Hebrews 1:14) Watchers (Daniel 4:13, 17, 23) Principalities (Col. 1:16) Cherubim (Gen. 3:24; Ex. 25:22; Psalm 18:10; Ezekiel 10:1-22) Seraphim (Isa. 6:2-7)

There are a great number of Angels (Deut. 33:2; Psalm 68:17; Heb. 12:22; Rev. 5:11). Revelation 5:11 “Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders.”

There are 2 Angels Named in the Bible.  Michael, the Archangel (Jude 9; Daniel 10:13, 21; I Thess. 4:16; Rev. 12:7-8)

Angels are spiritual beings without physical bodies (Psalm 104:4; Hebrews 1:14). Hebrews 1:14 “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”

Other Names of Angels

Gabriel (Daniel 8:16; 9:21; Luke 1:19, 26-27)

WHAT ANGELS DO 

Angels are mighty in power (Psalm 103:20; Eph. 1:21; Col. 1:16; 2 Peter 2:11; Matt. 28:2; Heb. 2:7; Daniel 10:13; Rev. 12:7-9; 20:1-3).

Angels are immortal (Matthew 22:30).

Angels have moral judgment (2 Peter 2:4; Jude 6). Jude 6 “And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home-- these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.”

Angels have high intelligence (2 Samuel 14:17; Matthew 28:5; Acts 12:6-11).

Psalm 103:20 “Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word.” Revelation 12:7-9 “And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down-- that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.”
