The 2017 Hamilton Municipal Senior of the Year Awards
NOMINATION PACKAGE The purpose of the Hamilton Municipal Senior Awards is to honour senior citizens who have made an outstanding voluntary contribution to enrich the social, cultural or civic life of our community.
The deadline to submit nominations is March 31, 2017.
The Awards event will be celebrated on June 13, 2017

Ontario Senior Of The Year Award The Ontario Senior of the Year is awarded by the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, and gives each municipality in Ontario the opportunity to honour one outstanding local Ontarian who after the age of 65 has voluntarily contributed to their community. Many different areas include the arts, literature, community service, education, fitness and sport or humanitarian activities.

Those nominated for Senior of the Year are also considered for the following awards of achievement. Please ensure your submission includes a detailed description of the nominees’ accomplishments that pertain to any of the additional awards. Lifetime Achievement Award The Lifetime Achievement Award is designed to recognize a senior volunteer who has demonstrated excellence in long-term service, commitment to the community and dedication to volunteerism.
Innovation Award The Innovation Award celebrates innovation through the creation of new or different programs, or services that have had a significant impact on the community and or affect the lives of seniors in the City of Hamilton.
Leadership Award The Leadership Award is designed to recognize a senior who consistently demonstrates dedication, motivation and a positive attitude. This individual acts as a role model, and inspires commitment from others to reach goals and accomplishments. The volunteer is passionate about serving others and demonstrates excellent skills in service to both internal and external customers. This individual possesses outstanding attributes, such as a “can-do” attitude, excellent communication skills, resourcefulness, creativity, reliability and overall passion within their volunteer role. This volunteer sets a high level of integrity by leading through example.
Diversity and Cultural Award The Diversity and Cultural Award is given to a volunteer who has achieved excellence in diversity and promoting positive results in making a difference to the community. The volunteer has assisted with developing creative and effective programs to bring our diverse cultures together. Expands public recognitions and elevates awareness of common values including respect for all citizens. Shows a sense of community and a concern for its preservation of cultural traditions.
Compassion and Companionship Award The Compassion and Companionship Award is given to a volunteer who demonstrates fellowship and friendship through both verbal and non-verbal behaviours, such as a smile or handshake. They actively listen to others demonstrating empathy and concern. This person is someone who is quick to advocate and support the most vulnerable within our community.
Economic Leadership Award The Economic Leadership Award is for a senior volunteer whose financial management/ leadership and/ or fundraising efforts have contributed to the livelihood of the organization. This volunteer has helped lead the way or made great strides in accomplishing the financial goals of an organization.
Healthy and Active Living Award The Healthy and Active Living Award is given to a senior volunteer who has assisted an organization to become and/or remain active, or has been instrumental in implementing healthy lifestyle programming. This individual has helped remove barriers and/ or “open doors” to encourage involvement and participation within an organization.
Behind the Scene Award The Behind the Scene Award is given to a volunteer who is not highly visible but is always there willing to assist in any way possible to better their community. The individual is dedicated to helping the community grow, prosper and enhance the quality of life of those who live and visit the City of Hamilton.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA The Nominee… • Must be 65 years of age or older • Have contributed to the enrichment of the social, cultural or civic life of the Hamilton community • Has made this commitment without thought of any personal or financial gain • Is not a previous recipient of the award • Provided the special work or service during/after the age of 65 (Lifetime Achievement Award excluded) • Has resided within the City of Hamilton for at least five years prior to nomination • Must currently be a resident of the City of Hamilton
GUIDELINES • One nomination form per nominee must be submitted • All information must be verifiable Submissions must include the following… • Reason for the nomination • The special work or service • The effect it had on the community • Who has benefited from these efforts
