SCHOOL RUGBY SCHOOL TEAMS TOURNAMENT INTER-SCHOOL TAG RUGBY

4 MAY | JAMOR - RUGBY

SCHOOL RUGBY The School Rugby and Get into Rugby programmes are an integral part of the development strategy and growth of the game that the Federação Portuguesa de Rugby (Portugal Rugby Union) has established with the National School Sports Programme and World Rugby to be able to place an oval ball in each Portuguese school. The approach of putting Rugby in the school arena in Portugal and the Get into Rugby programme abide to a common strategy, residing in motivating boys and girls of all ages to experiment, play and remain in rugby through club teams. The Tag Rugby Programme in Schools and Get into Rugby promote the values of rugby and ascertain that all children and youngsters experiment with rugby in a safe environment through an educative and pedagogical approach. In this approach we intend for the game to be played safely, with enjoyment and through a pedagogical orientation, leading to satisfaction and happiness that a game of rugby should aways provide. The initiation process to contact rugby is a long progressive process adapted to the learning tempo/ rhythm of each individual or team (Tag – Touch – Block – Tackle), generating confidence towards the integration in a normal match with physical contact, as is played at club level. PARTNERS

TAG RUGBY Tag rugby is an introductory game to rugby, easy to play, fun and safe. It is played by co-ed teams, even in small spaces and on hard surfaces. In Tag rugby the fundamentals of rugby are present: running with the ball, dodging, passing and try scoring. Due to safety reasons and for purposes of progression in the learning process of the game, there are no tackles and this aspect of the game is replaced by the “tag"; the action of removing the tag strip from the ball carrier. Tag rugby has been introduced in our schools’ PE (Physical Education) curriculum through this Programme. This inter-school tournament is the result of the work undertaken by the school teachers with their pupils in their schools. We expect 500 scholars from 19 achools from the Lisboa, Sintra, Oeiras, Cascais, Amadora and Loures regions.

SCHOOL TEAMS (CONTACT RUGBY) The school teams have weekly training sessions with their teachers and whose pupils are voluntarily registered in rugby. The Variation of the game adopted for these teams is Seven-a-side, where there is progression in the introduction to contact during the competition (level 1: tag rugby; level2: blocking; level 3: tackling). Most of these teams created their contact rugby school team following their participation in the “School Tag Rugby Programme". In this regional tournament 200 pupils (boys and girls) will participate, representing 15 schools with contact rugby teams from the regions of Lisboa, Setúbal, Lezíria, Oeste, Cascais and Sintra.
