FAQ What is Giving Tuesday?

Founded in 2012, Giving Tuesday is a response to the product-driven holiday season. After the annual buying frenzies of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, people can give something back on Giving Tuesday. This international day of giving harnesses the power of social media to put nonprofits in the spotlight. It celebrates the organizations that work to improve our world.

Why Giving Tuesday?

For one thing, it’s fun! Giving Tuesday is all about making posters, sharing pictures and telling everyone what’s important to you. This is a time to raise awareness about global mission, build excitement, get people involved and increase support for what God is doing through International Ministries (IM). For another thing, it’s effective. In 2013, over 10,000 organizations participated, 17,000 unselfies were published and $19.2 million was raised for charities.

How can you get involved?

1. The Date. Mark your calendar! This year’s Giving Tuesday is on December 2. 2. The Unselfie. Make a sign that expresses your support for global ministry. Then grab your camera or smartphone and take a picture of yourself holding the sign. - Post your unselfie to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. - No social media? No problem! We’ll post it for you on IM’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Just email your unselfie to [email protected]. 3. The Profile Picture. On December 2 (or earlier!) change your social media profile picture to your unselfie, or to any of the graphics available on IM’s website. 3. The Gift. Give a financial gift of any amount to IM on or before December 2 at www.InternationalMinistries.org/drives/24. To give by check, write “Giving Tuesday” on the memo line and mail to International Ministries, PO Box 851, Valley Forge, PA 19482-0851. To give to a missionary, write the missionary’s name on the memo line of your check or in the “Special Instructions” section of the online giving form. 4. The Tools. For more resources, check out www.InternationalMinistries.org/drives/24. 4. The Questions. If you have any questions or comments, contact Laura Timmel at (610) 768-2009 or [email protected]. Any unselfie posted to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #IntMin as well as #GivingTuesday and/or #unselfie may be used by IM online or in print for promotional purposes.
