SIXSTEP Secondary Marks SixStep uses dance as a medium to help teens living with HIV/AIDS. Through the different genres of popular dance movements, every teen can find his or her own dance style. This peer-related community center focuses on the connection between the teens, dance instructors and peer counselors. Our center’s name derives from a foundational move in breakdance called the sixstep that dancers use as the basis for other moves because it helps build momentum, which is symbolic of our center. Inexplicitly, the process that HIV goes through when entering one’s immune system also consists of six steps. The spaces within our center consists of: Tangle, our dance rooms where teens can express themselves and connect with others, Shuffle, peer counseling (prevention and education) rooms, Trot, our top-notch treatment facilities, and Break, our gift store that offers accessories teens can take home with them and be reminded that they are part of something they can be proud of. We want teens to know that SixStep is here to help them bounce back and redeem control of their life.
