Teaching three religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam in the primary school Bristol: 13 November 2012 Manchester: 17 April 2013
This one-day course addresses practical ways of learning about and from three religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The course will improve teachers’ and co-ordinators’ subject knowledge and provide them with a variety of engaging and effective strategies for learning about and from these religions. Resources and ideas will be shared, supporting creative, visual, active and enquiry-based learning for children from 5 to 11. This course will support teachers in: • creating a planned learning experience for children in each of these religions • ensuring progression in teaching about and from Christianity, Judaism and Islam across the primary age range • awareness of appropriate learning strategies to deal with challenging topics such as prayer, belief and religion in the community • using a variety of effective and engaging learning strategies in RE • feeling more confident when teaching about Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
Outline of the day Session 1: 9.30am – 10.45am Teaching three religions • An introduction to Christianity, Islam and Judaism • Common concerns: positive and negative ways of representing religions • Teaching about authentic religion 10.45am – 11.10am Coffee and opportunity to view and purchase resources Session 2: 11.10am – 12.30pm Exploring Islam? • What should be taught in KS1? In KS2? • Examples of learning activities involving creativity and thinking: belief, celebration and action • Teaching challenging topics in Islam 12.30pm – 1.30pm Lunch and opportunity to view and purchase resources Session 3: 1.30pm – 2.30pm Exploring Judaism? • What should be taught in KS1? In KS2? • Examples of learning activities involving creativity and thinking: family, community and belief • Teaching challenging topics in Judaism Session 4: 2.30pm – 3.30pm Exploring Christianity? • What should be taught in KS1? In KS2? • Examples of learning activities involving creativity and thinking: belief, behaviour and celebration • Teaching challenging topics in Judaism 3.30pm Conclusions and evaluation All delegates will receive a folder of resources and online access to the presentations and other resources used

This course is being led by Fiona Moss
Fiona was a primary teacher and RE co-ordinator for many years, and more recently the RE and SACRE Curriculum Adviser for unitary authority in a plural context. She has overseen the development of its local syllabus and non-statutory guidance, as well as being involved in training teachers in its implementation. She has written and edited a variety of publications designed to support RE teachers and is currently the editor of RE Today’s Opening up RE series. Fiona is also a long-standing and active member of NATRE, and is well known in this context for her support of local groups of teachers, and her involvement in a variety of consultations and initiatives at a national level. She has also worked as a primary consultant specialising in SEAL, Literacy, and Gifted & Talented.
