his past six months has brought us SPE members and our nation unprecedented challenges. You are all knowledgeable about our region’s issues. Whatever else we may focus on personally, a top priority for us and Michigan is jobs. Those of us who are employed are thankful daily and work hard at keeping our jobs the best we can, while helping others less fortunate however we can. Those who are unemployed are searching, both for hope and a new position. In either situation, what we all share is an increased interest in networking with fellow plastic industry professionals. Your Society of Plastics Engineers can help you meet this desire. We are extending a complimentary offer to all current and past or potential members of SPE Detroit Section to join us as our guests at our upcoming March 19th technical dinner meeting (see front cover for more details on this event). All we ask is that you contact Pat Levine to make a reservation so that we will have enough dinners for all who wish to attend. Typically, you have been supportive of your organization in the past by paying dues and participating in selected events, perhaps even working on one of our committees or the Board of Directors. The Detroit Section would like to help you in your time of need. By offering an opportunity to network with those in the local industry, we hope to facilitate the sharing of ideas, strategies and leads while giving you a chance to hear a technically-based presentation on plastic materials and process by a distinguished industry professional, Dr. Rose Ryntz of IAC. The SPE Detroit Section and SPE Automotive Division representatives have been exploring other ideas on helping to deal with the employment situation. They include a seminar on 2

job search strategies and a job fair. While details are still being worked out, we hope to offer our profession additional support in this area this year. In the meantime, there are many existing groups in the Southeast MI area striving to support those who are seeking re-employment assistance. One in particular is called Careers in Transition, hosted by my church, First Congregational Church of Rochester. It welcomes all in the community. The support includes equipping individuals with the skills and tools necessary to effectively carry out a job search campaign. For more information on this particular group, check out the website www.fccrochester.org. To look for other similar groups in the area, go to http://www.ctsministries.org. Lastly, the SPE Detroit Section has many opportunities for volunteers to work on something that they have a passion for while networking. We need volunteers to help with our many Education Committee activities, such as MI student chapters, scholarships, student essay contest, Engineering Week activities, Plastivan visits to middle and high schools and Toys for Kids program. Alternatively, you can work on the planning committee for one of our technical programs such as Auto EPCON and TPO Conference or our Material Auction. If you would like to help us recruit new members, plan our next years’ programs, organize and publish our Newsletter or other communications efforts, we would welcome you to attend one of our Detroit Section board of directors’ meetings (upcoming schedule is listed on our website at www.spedetroit. com or www.4spe.org) and talk first hand with your BoD and committee members to learn more. Or you can just call me or one of our board members for more information. Hope to see you soon. www.SPEdetroit.com

E-Communications Irv Poston, General Motors (retired) Get Connected! The trend is toward more electronic communication and less snail-mail. This is the first printed and mailed issue of our Trends & Topics newsletter for the 2008-2009 year. Up to this point, our main communication with members consisted of four emailed News Briefs. Also, we again used an electronic ballot for election of our new Councilor, Norm Kakarala. If you did not receive these emails, the reason may be: 1. Your correct email address is not in your SPE Profile.

As an Affiliate Society Member of the Engineering Society of Detroit, our meetings are listed on the Events Calendar on their website (www.ESD.org). Wayne Hertlein is our Detroit Section “Intersociety” representative. Be sure to ask him about the ESD member benefits that are available to members of ESD affiliated societies. In addition to emailing electronic News Briefs, we also send printed mailings through the Post Office. It’s essential that we have good addresses and that your company permits delivery. Home email and postal addresses may be better to assure that you get all of these mailings. If you think that your email or postal address should be updated to assure delivery, or if have any comments, questions, or suggestions regarding our communications efforts, please contact Irv Poston at 248-646-9574, [email protected]

2. You have “unsubscribed” and the email was not sent to you. 3. Your computer or company blocks the email. 4. You are not listed as an Active Member of SPE. We currently have 930 Active Members who have paid dues or are unemployed. As of the end of the year, we had 234 members suspended in 2008 plus 205 members suspended in 2007. It’s important that you maintain Active Membership to receive all of the benefits that SPE has to offer. Check the website at www.4SPE.org.
