Texas Wesleyan To Join Sooner Athletic Conference in 2013 Texas Wesleyan University and two other Texas schools will move to the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) beginning in the 2013-2014 academic year. Texas Wesleyan, Northwood University and Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) – all longtime members of the Red River Athletic Conference – will join the SAC. The announcement was made jointly by the schools’ presidents – Texas Wesleyan’s Frederick G. Slabach, SAGU’s Kermit Bridges and Northwood’s Kevin Fegan in September 2012. Texas Wesleyan, as well as Northwood and SAGU, have enjoyed their tenure with RRAC, but are looking forward to what the new relationship will offer, Slabach said. “This move isn’t just about joining a more competitive conference,” Slabach said. “The closer proximity of other conference schools gives our student-athletes the benefit of spending more time in class and less time on the road.” Having 10 schools in the SAC means the conference will be able to advance two teams out of the conference to post-season competitions. “The competitive environment in the Sooner is demanding,” Slabach said. “But we look forward to the challenge.” SAC Commissioner John Hudson said the conference is delighted with the additions of these three great institutions and believes the move creates one of the strongest conferences in the NAIA. Current SAC schools are John Brown, Mid-America Christian, Oklahoma Baptist, Oklahoma City, St. Gregory’s, Wayland Baptist, and the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. The SAC’s offices are located in Oklahoma City.

Texas Wesleyan
This Is Texas Wesleyan
History Texas Wesleyan University was founded in 1890 by the Methodist Episcopal Church South as Polytechnic College. Classes began in 1891. A faculty of 10 taught a student body of 111 that first year. In 1914, the Polytechnic College was designated The Women’s College for Southern Methodism, eventually becoming Texas Women’s College. In 1934, male students were admitted, and the college took the name of Texas Wesleyan College. This change was, in large measure, due to the transfer of assets from Texas Wesleyan Academy in Austin. This marked a new era for the University’s stability and future growth. On Jan. 9, 1989, the name was officially changed to Texas Wesleyan University in recognition of the University’s outstanding graduate programs in Education and Health Science. On Aug. 1, 1992, the University acquired the Dallas/Fort Worth School of Law, now the Texas Wesleyan University School of Law. The Law School is located in downtown Fort Worth and is fully accredited by the American Bar Association. Today, Texas Wesleyan University offers undergraduate and graduate studies to more than 2,800 students on the historic campus, law school downtown Fort Worth campus and satellite campus in Burleson. Mission The University endeavors to create a learning environment where each student is provided an opportunity to pursue individual excellence, to think
clearly and creatively and to communicate effectively. The University also strives to develop a sense of civic responsibility and spiritual sensitivity, with a commitment to moral discrimination and action. Texas Wesleyan strives to develop informed, responsible and articulate citizens.
Academics Texas Wesleyan University is a great school for students who wish to pursue their careers in business, education, science, humanities or performing arts. Texas Wesleyan helps students achieve their academic dreams and goals through a dedicated faculty, 83 percent of whom earned doctoral or terminal degrees in their field. With a multitude of undergraduate majors in business, education, liberal studies, performing arts, and natural and social sciences, students will be able to satisfy just about any interest they have for the future.
