1967 The 1967 gridiron season once again proved that Montclair High School has the best football team in town. (This yearbook staff writer seems a bit irreverent) A win over Paterson Eastside got the Mounties off to a victorious start. (We won 13-7) The big "M” trounced Irvington (21-0), Kearny (33-0), Nutley (14-0), and Columbia (33-6). The only blemishes on the team’s record were one loss to East Orange (39-7), and one tie with Seton Hall Prep (13-13). In the classic game against Bloomfield, Montclair High School won for the 23rd year in a row (20-0), once again proving that the Thanksgiving Game is no turkey for Montclair. (The Mounties also defeated Clifton 13-7). Responsible for a good part of our football success (Montclair ranked 4th in the State), was Clary Anderson aided by Angelo “Butch” Fortunato. The Kearny game marked the 200th win of Clary’s coaching career.

1968 (From the 1969 Yearbook provided by Paul C. Augustine.) (’68 is Clary’s last year coaching football at Montclair High School) Under the direction of Clary Anderson, the Montclair High Football team has gained a reputation as a continual contender for state championship honors. Yet the 1968 season proved to be a disappointing one with a final record of 5 wins, 3 losses, and one tie. Though many teams would be proud of the season’s record, it was discouraging for the Mounties. At the start of the season, observers felt the team might again go undefeated. Losses to East Orange (34-20), Seton Hall (7-6), and Clifton (27-20), dashed these hopes. A tie score with Bloomfield (7-7) broke the Mounties’ more than twenty-year winning record over the Bengals. The individual efforts by co-captains Bill Scanlon and Tim Berra provided evidence of the season’s determined playing. Promise for future seasons lies in the experience gained by potentially victorious underclassmen. Jayvees coached by Mike Oriel, Commandoes coached by Connie Egan and Raiders coached by Dick Hapward and Mike Arace, each racked up good records. No immediate threat to future Mountie glory. The ’68 Mounties defeated Paterson Eastside 28-13, Irvington 47-7, Kearny 33-20, Nutley 25-7, and Columbia 33-0.
