Directions for Set Up This is a great game for students to practice their number bonds and is super simple to set up. Go to your pantry and dig out those large dried beans*. You know, the ones you bought ages ago when you were going to get more fiber in your diet. Yep, there they are--hidden behind the dark chocolate. Dump the beans into a container. Print out The Bean Game sheet. Work your math center magic. You can get all fancy if you want or you can just plunk the container and the directions down on a table. Let your students have at it. If you want to see how I used this game in my homeschool classroom visit: http://lessonsinhomeschooling.blogspot.com You can follow me on TPT as well so you’ll get updates when I post more math games. *Note: If you are highly suspicious your class contains the type of student likely to stick beans in unsanctioned places choose something larger for the manipulative like base ten blocks. It is just easier to work with larger numbers + student hand sizes if you are using manipulatives the size of dried beans.

Show your partner how many beans you have in one hand, but keep the beans in the other hand hidden. Ask your partner, “How many are hiding?” Wait for their answer.

6.! Show them the answer. Did they ! get it right? 7.! ! ! ! !

Go back to step 4 again, make sure to hide a different amount of beans. (For example, if you started with 5 beans and hid 2 beans the first time, this time hide 1 or 4 !beans).

8.! After playing three times, switch places and let your ! partner pick a handful of beans. The Bean Game, 2012, Patricia Potts, http://lessonsinhomeschooling.blogspot.com
