SUNY Oneonta • 14th Season Karen Haag is in her 14th year as head coach of The College of Saint Rose women’s basketball team, where she has remodeled the Golden Knights into a team that has staked its claim as an elite NCAA program. Haag’s impact is quite apparent. Saint Rose has garnered four bids to the NCAA Tournament within the past eight years, and had made nine straight postseason appearances prior to the 2012-13 season. The Queens, N.Y., native has accomplished that by establishing herself as an astute leader and by providing the College’s highly visible women’s basketball program with a sense of consistency and a progressive mindset. In addition to her coaching responsibilities, Haag is in charge of scheduling and also serves as the advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in her role as the department’s Senior Woman Administrator. A strong advocate of community service, Haag is a co-founder of Camp BraveHearts which is a series of retreats designed for women who have been diagnosed with cancer. The camp affords participants an opportunity to learn new skills, increase self-esteem and confidence, and help address the risks and fears that many women face during and after treatment. Haag, who is a cancer survivor herself, has also been involved with “Coaches vs Cancer” for the American Cancer Society. In September 2008, Haag received the Make a Difference Award from the Susan G. Komen Foundation, an honor that is given once per-year to an outstanding individual who has made a difference in the lives of individuals facing breast cancer. Furthermore, she has served on the Wilkes-Barre YMCA Board of Directors in addition to participating in numerous other community service ventures. Haag graduated from Oneonta State in 1984 with a degree in English and secondary education. She also holds a master’s degree in curriculum planning and development from the University at Albany. As a player, Haag garnered two-time team MVP honors, was an All-SUNYAC Conference pick as a senior and ranks top-10 All-Time in scoring, assists and steals. She was also the first female basketball player to be inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Prior to Saint Rose, Haag made head coaching stops at Wilkes University (1991-01) and SUNY Delhi (1989-91). She also served as an assistant at UAlbany (1988-89) and Ithaca College (1987-88) after serving as varsity head coach at Oneonta High School from 1984-87.
Noteworthy Awards • Won her 150th game as Saint Rose head coach (2012) • Honored at the 40th annual National Jefferson Awards Ceremony • First women’s basketball player inducted into Oneonta State Hall of Fame • Recognized as Honorary Gala Chair - Gilda’s Club - Capital Region, NY (2009) • WBCA Most Inspirational Award (2009) • Honored by the Susan G. Komen Foundation with Make A Difference Award (2008) • Russell/WBCA Regional Coach of the Year (2007) • Susan G. Komen Cameo Award (2004)
