T h e east face of Longs Peak w as ascended by R . L . M . U n d er h ill, alone, in Ju n e, 1929, by the o rigin al route. T h is is the first lone ascent since the o rigin al ascent, by Professor A lexander. T h e east face has, as usual, proved too difficult for inexperienced clim bers. E arly in A ugust, 1929, tw o young men w ere marooned a ll night in the Notch Chim ney and w ere fin ally rescued by guides. T w o weeks later C h arles W . T hiem eyer, of D enver, tw enty-eight years old, fell w h ile ascending the Notch Chim ney. T h e fa ll of over 1,000 feet w as of course fatal. It w as probably from this chim ney th at G regory Aubuchon fell to his death in 1921 w hile attem pting a descent alone. T h e fa tal accident to Forest K etrin g in 1926 w as probably at a low er point. T h iem eyer’s companions w ere forced to spend the night in the Chim ney and w ere rescued the next day by guides w ith the aid of ropes. T h is p arty of three w ere members of the Swiss A lpine C lub and w ere using a rope, although a ll of the p arty w ere not tied to the rope at the tim e of the accident.
