Falcons conclude record setting season The 2013-2014 season came to a close after a great run to the Elite Eight of the WNIT. After defeating Michigan and earning the 30th win of the season, we hosted Rutgers and legendary coach, Vivian Stringer, here at the Stroh. The Scarlet Knights earned a five point victory to close our season and had two more victories along the way to claim the WNIT crown. Other wins for BG in the WNIT included victories over St. Bonaventure, where former BGSU standout Kate Achter is an assistant coach, and High Point. With the post-season included, the Falcons posted a 16-1 record at the Stroh. The 30 wins in a season is 2nd most in BGSU and MAC history, behind the 2006-2007 team that compiled a 31-4 record while advancing to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. BGSU won more than 20 games for the 11th consecutive season, a MAC record.

The Falcons advanced to national postseason play for the 10th consecutive year and won three national postseason games in a season for the first time in program history. The team’s

seniors were part of 106 wins during their time here, with an overall mark of 106-28 and a MAC regular-season record of 55-11 over the last four seasons. BGSU won three MAC East Division titles, including two outright conference regular-season champion-

ships, and advanced to national postseason play in all four seasons. The following awards were given out at the team’s banquet held in April: Player of the Year (Dan Long): Alexis Rogers Falcon Award (Joan Slebos): BGSU Team Power POY (George & Susan Lang): Alexis Rogers Playmaker of the Year (Ron Thompson): Jillian Halfhill Impact POY (Bill Lloyd): Jillian Halfhill Most Improved Player (Larry & Fran Weiss): Deb Hoekstra Scholar-Athlete of the Year (Steve & Rhonda Melchi): Deb Hoekstra & Jill Stein Outstanding Senior Achievement Award (Fran & Marty Voll): Alexis Rogers

Seniors looking forward to summer workouts All returning players and incoming freshmen will be back on campus June 29th for a 6-week summer session. While taking a minimum of three credit hours, they will be working with Kenny, our strength and conditioning coach, on a daily basis. They will also be on the court two hours a week with coaches for skills training. We recently met up with seniors, Deb Hoekstra and Jasmine Matthews, and got a few thoughts from them regarding their summer. “What are you most excited for this summer?” Deb: “I can’t wait to see how everyone is going to fill roles on this young team and to really get after it with a hard working group of girls.” Jas: “I’m most excited to have everyone back, working out together again in the gym and in the weight room. I’m excited for all the team bonding. I’m looking forward to seeing us get better individually and as a team.”

“What’s the best part of having the whole team here together for the summer session?” Deb: “The best part is the chemistry that forms from the struggles and the chance everyone has to grow together as people and players. Also, all the fun we have!” Jas: “Honestly, just being together again. BG is like my home and everyone here is my family so it doesn’t seem right without my sisters here. Also, excited to get back on the court and have fun again and improve on things we struggled with last season and perfect the things we did well on.” “If you could give any advice to the incoming freshmen, what would it be?” Deb: “My advice would be to never get too down on yourself and never get too frustrated. Never be afraid to ask questions or mess up because we’ve all been there. Work your butt off and only compare yourself to the person you were yesterday and make sure you get better every day. And, enjoy it every second because it really does fly by.” Jas: “Don’t over pack, you will get plenty of gear while you are here! Try to learn the plays and understand concepts as fast as you can. Use your time efficiently and have as much fun as you possibly can. Oh yeah, get on the good side of the upperclassmen by sharing your meal plan money!”

2014-2015 Game Preview While the conference schedule has not been released, we have a good idea of what our non-conference schedule is going to consist of. The year will open up with an exhibition game vs. Davis & Elkins out of West Virginia in early November. The following week, we will host Bucknell University in our season opener. The Iona College Gaels will be coming to Stroh for a re-match of last year’s Iona College Tip-Off Tournament Championship game, where we held on for a one point victory. November will be concluded on the road at University of WisconsinMilwaukee and a two game stretch at the Loyola Marymount Tournament in Los Angeles, California. Out in LA, we will be joined by the University of California-Irvine and University of Alabama-Birmingham. December will start off at home vs. the University of Cincinnati. We will travel to Loretto, Pennsylvania the following week for a match-up vs. St. Francis University. Before winter break, we will head to Illinois for a two game stretch at Illinois State and Bradley University. Our non-conference schedule will conclude in Miami, Florida at the Florida International Tournament. Potential match-ups in the tournament include FIU, Hampton, and Auburn. Dates and times will be released once the schedule is finalized.
