Volume XXXV, Issue 8 2017 Officers

Flight Captain - John Mitchell, Vice Flight Captain – Gary Moore, Adjutant – Rich Burger, Vice Adjutant – Steve Foster Treasurer – Fred Drake, Vice Treasurer – Kent Nelson, Chaplain – John Denham, Asst Chaplain – Tom Logan, Provost Marshall – Derek Fisbeck, Vice Provost Marshall – Dennis Cook This is a private organization. It is not part of the Department of Defense or any of its components and it has no governmental status.

Flight Captain’s Corner Rich Burger recently reminded me that 2017 might be seen as the Centennial of U.S. air power. America entered WWI in 1917; by August, the influx of well-trained airmen and aircraft, under Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell, allowed our Air Corps to mount the massed forces needed to help bring WWI to an end. From an historical view, it’s also important to note that August 2017 is the 110th anniversary of the Aeronautical Division of the U.S. Army Signal Corps, the genesis of all of our military air forces. It’s a good time to toast the roots of Daedalians, founded by WWI aviators! The flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey reminds me of floods resulting from Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and also along the Front Range of Colorado four years ago. During each of these disasters, national guard, reservist, and active duty Daedalian members served vital roles in recon, search and rescue. Wyoming’s own G Co, 2/211 Avn Bn, deployed to aid in Katrina. Following is a photo of a UH-60 assisting flood relief east of Nederland, CO.

Next Meeting Saturday, September 12, 2017 at 1500 Location: Air National Guard Dining Facility Light Meal $13.00 RSVP to: Steve Foster 307-638-2120 or [email protected] SPECIAL NOTE: Please let Steve know if you are coming OR NOT. This will keep him from trying to call you for your status. September Program: LTC Roth, Army Aviation Update The August Program The August meeting was our annual family picnic. Steve Foster provided these observations: We came, we ate, and we left. Our annual picnic came off as usual and everyone had fun, visited with one another, and ate and drank too much. The weather was fine until a passing rain shower put a temporary damper on anything outside of the protective roof over our heads. The rain passed and the party went on. There was plenty of food supplied by the members or their wives and enough meat for all, in fact, there was meat left over. Dick Larsen made the ice cream and it was excellent when covered by the toppings that Van Mellblom brought.

Developed at the end of 1916 and introduced in early 1917, the Curtiss N-9 seaplane was based upon the Curtiss JN-4B. A biplane trainer, it was widely used and remained in service with the United States Army and Navy flying schools until 1927. Jack was sitting in an airplane when another guy took the seat beside him. The new guy was an absolute wreck, pale, hands shaking, biting his nails and moaning in fear. "Hey, pal, what's the matter?" Jack asked "Oh man... I've been transferred to California," the other guy answered, "there's crazy people in California and they have shootings, gangs, race riots, drugs, the highest crime rate..." "Hold on," Jack interrupted, "I've lived in California all my life, and it is not as bad as the media says. Find a nice home, go to work, mind your own business, enroll your kids in a good school and it's as safe as anywhere in the world." The other passenger relaxed and stopped shaking for a moment and said, "Oh, thank you. I've been worried to death, but if you live there and say it's OK, I'll take your word for it. What do you do for a living?" "Me?" said Jack, "I'm a tail gunner on a bread truck."

Treasurers Report July 2017

An airplane encountered some turbulence, it started juddering and rocking noticeably from side to side. The flight crew wheeled out the drinks cart to keep the passengers calm. The attendant asked a business man “Would you like a drink?" “Why not? “I’ll have whatever the pilot’s been having."
