It is hoped that this annual or semi-annual “batched” approach will more smoothly manage the growth of both hydrilla and other lake vegetation without eliminating virtually all vegetation from the lake bottom as was seen when 10,500 carp were released in 2010.
The Chesterfield County Utilities Department has now developed an overall plan designed to deal with the resurgence of hydrilla. This plan was developed in conjunction with a nationally known lake ecology expert, Dr. Kenneth Wagner. The plan will evolve as experience is gained. The main elements of the plan are: • Release approximately 1000 sterile triploid grass carp into the lake in late April. Interestingly, the location of the release is not important because the carp scout the whole lake within a couple of days, looking for vegetation to eat!
Utilities will continue to monitor both vegetation and algae in the reservoir and the Virginia Game and Inland Fisheries staff will assess fishery health. As David Sirois, Plant Manager of the Addison-Evans Water Production & Laboratory Facility (the water plant just below the dam) says, “Remember biological systems are difficult to control due to the many natural variables that affect them!” So, in essence, this is a research effort which is seeking to achieve the right balance for good water quality, an attractive lake, healthy fish and fishing, and pleasant boating. We will keep you informed as the research effort progresses. submitted by Tom Hoekstra, member Reservoir Hydrilla Management Group

• Plan on releasing “batches” of carp at more regular intervals, possibly annually or every 2 years. This establishes several “classes” of carp of different ages (and appetites!) which, hopefully, will provide more steady control of the hydrilla.
In the February issue of Life on the Lake (P. 18), you received an update on the reappearance of hydrilla in Swift Creek Reservoir. As of last fall, hydrilla had reemerged in about 25% of the reservoir bottom. And, for the first time, heavy growth of hydrilla was seen in “Tom Sawyer Bay” behind the Woodlake Marina and Boathouse.
