Parent engagement affects the learning environment for teachers and students, ultimately effecting achievement rates for learners. The purpose of the Enhancing Parent Engagement Training Series is to promote effective parent engagement practices that will assist Local Education Agencies (LEAs) in the development or enhancement of trusting, collaborative, and productive relationships among school staff, families, and community members in an effort to yield positive results for all students.

This training series is designed to engage school leaders and their staff in the assessment, study and site-based advancement of research and evidence based findings supporting parent engagement strategies and practices aligned to the National PTA Standards for Family-School Partnerships.

The Training Series Includes:   



A needs-based, differentiated course of study focused on one of six study modules The establishment of smaller learning communities comprised of other LEAs who share similar site-based needs School leaders and their staff working in their home school environment to advance both professional development opportunities for the school community and implementation of newly learned strategies to bolster parent engagement On-site technical assistance from PaTTAN consultants between regional sessions

Engage in collegial discussion of current best practices in parent engagement Promote recognition, respect, and commitment to addressing families’ needs, while bridging cultural differences Adhere to a philosophy of partnership where power and responsibility are shared and families are seen as effective advocates for their children

Explain the correlation between effective parent engagement and student success, as made evident through current scholarly research Identify the effect parent engagement has on improving the learning environment for teachers and students and the impact it has on achievement rates for learners Describe the key concepts associated with National PTA’s Standards for Family – School Partnerships Use formative assessment and base-line data to prioritize and target a key focus area in which sitebased parent engagement requires a plan for improvement Develop, implement and monitor a customized action plan designed to strengthen and sustain parent engagement and student success Engage in regional and site-based trainings and activities geared towards building the capacity of school staff to bolster parent engagement and student success

Team Commitments:  Establish a school based core team reflective of the school diversity and includes the following required team members: a building level administrator, general education teacher(s), special education teacher(s), and parent(s). Optional team members include: special education administrator, community partner  Designate an LEA Site Coordinator to ensure implementation of onsite activities and follow up to training activities  Participate in all scheduled training days  Develop an action plan - based on the completed Indicator 8 Needs Assessment – to strengthen and sustain opportunities to engage families in school level activities  Develop a training plan to be implemented between the seven arranged sessions to build capacity of school staff

Required Training Sessions: A total of six sessions are scheduled for the training series. Three sessions will take place at the regional PaTTAN offices in Harrisburg, King of Prussia, and Pittsburgh. Each session will run from 9:00 am -3:30 pm. Lunch will be provided at the regional sessions. Dates for the regional trainings in Pittsburgh and King of Prussia: November 14, 2011 January 10, 2012 April 17, 2012 Dates for the regional trainings in Harrisburg: November 14, 2011 January 17, 2012 April 17, 2012 Three sessions will take place via distance learning or through onsite visits to the LEAs. Dates for the distance learning/onsite sessions are December 13, 2011 (onsite), February 14, 2012 (webinar), and March 13, 2012 (onsite).

Credits: Act 48 hours will be available for each day of training at the regional PaTTAN offices and the February 14th webinar.

Individuals attending this event must arrive on time and stay the duration of the event to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions must be brought to the attention of the individual’s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the event. Act 48 hours will be offered for this training series.
