John 17

John 17:1-5 1 ¶ When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

"Crabs pull each other down the pot. That's what everybody do here, Nobody wants to see us shine." Chino Braxton

“..we all possess a legitimate glory hunger. I feel it in me, and its badly broken.” Matt Chandler

1) The object of Christ glorification: The Father’s Glory. “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you,..” vs 1

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14

2) The means of Christ’s glorification: The Cross. “Father, the hour has come;…..”

John 12 23 Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 I tell you the truth, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds…… 27 ¶ "Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again."

“The very event by which the Son was being lifted up in horrible ignominy and shame was that for which he would be praised around the world by men and women whose sins he had borne… The hideous profanity of Golgotha means nothing less than the Son’s glorification.” D. A. Carson

“If you want to see Jesus as He really is you must see Him on the Cross—the Cross is the brightest and clearest display of His nature and purpose.” John Stott

3) The goal of Christ glorification: Knowing God

“ since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”

John 12 23 Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 I tell you the truth, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.

25 The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honour the one who serves me.

“ Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. Such a high priest meets our need — one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.”

Hebrews 7:25,26

• Jn 17: 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, • 1Pe 5:10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ • 1Pe 5:4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.

• 2 Cor 3:18 we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. • 2Co 4:17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

“ God is the Lover who is absorbed and enamored with us. He listens to us as we pour out our hearts, talk incessantly about Him, ourselves, our loved ones, jobs, ups and downs, inner stru-gles, success, failures, the world, injustices, the economy, religion, and politics.” Vernette Abrahams

“Jesus wants us to be without pretense when we come to him in prayer. Instead we often try to be something we aren’t… the gospel is the welcoming heart of God. God cheers when we come to him with our wobbling, unsteady prayers.” Paul Miller, The Praying Life
