We welcomed four new members to our chapter this year: Karen Murray, Jillian Walker, Gillian Guy, and Sandy Lilly. We look forward to helping each one of you advance in your careers and support you in your goals. We had some fabulous speakers and great topics this year including “Constructing Your Career: Succession Planning,” “Business Solutions for Greater Productivity,” “Trials and Tribulations of Working in a Male Dominated Field,” How to “Cook Up” a Good Presentation Making it “Remarkable” with PowerPoint,” “Using Intuition to Advance Your Career,” and “CYC: Building Relationships Across Space and Time.” The Lakeland Chapter was able to help out three local charities: Senior Orphans, Florida Baptist Children’s Home, and the Detention Center for Kids thru the Polk County Sheriff’s Department. What great organizations!! The Florida Division and chapters put on some amazing meetings with fabulous speakers that I was able to attend. I think my favorite speaker and topic this year was “Huddle Up” and the importance of being a team player, not only in our chapters but also in our lives!! I would like to thank Iris Ojeda, CAP-OM, for your guidance this year as our division representative. You did such a phenomenal job with keeping me on track for Chapter of Excellence and Silver Continued on page 5

LEADERSHIP….

One of the fundamental truths about leadership is that leadership is everyone’s business. Even in

this technological age, leadership is not reserved for a select few. Leadership is a learned behavior, which is not associated with titles or position. What inhibits the development of more leaders is not the absence of potential, but the mindset that leadership cannot be learned. Jim Whittaker, the first American to climb Mt. Everest stated, “You never conquer the mountain. You conquer yourself – your doubts and fears.” Leaders don’t conquer an organization, nor conquer leadership. It is conquering your own doubts and fears about leading. Leaders make a difference. We learn from those who lead; those people who we admire and willingly follow. Discover what it takes to influence others; discover the power that lies within to make a difference. Leaders are not only well-known, larger than life figures, but often it’s someone personally close to us who has helped us learn – a parent, friend, coach, teacher, manager. If

 Continued from page 2 Leadership we are to become leaders, we must believe that we, too, can be a positive force in the world. Leadership does have everything to do with what we think of ourselves. Leaders make connections – between people, the present and the future. Person to person over time, leaders make a difference. If you want to have a significant impact on people, communities, and organizations, it is wise to invest in learning to become the very best leader you can be. But first, you must believe that a leader lives within each of us. Leadership is not an affair of the head, but of the heart. Love what you do.

…LEAD ON ADMINS.

2012-2013 Florida Division President Patti Clark, CAP-OM presented the Silver Certificate award to Lakeland Chapter President Susan Goeltzenleuchter, CAP.

What is IAAP? The International Association of Administrative Professionals is a not-for-profit professional association for office professionals with approximately 40,000 members and affiliates and nearly 600 chapters worldwide. Our mission is to enhance the success of careerminded administrative professionals by providing opportunities for growth through education, community building and leadership development. The association was founded in 1942 as the National Secretaries Association to provide a professional network and educational resources for secretarial staff. The association's name was changed in 1998 to the International Association of Administrative Professionals to encompass the large number of varied administrative job titles and recognize the advancing role of administrative support staff in business and government. Beginning with the

2013 Florida Division Annual Meeting A First Timer’s Perspective

drive home Sunday from my very first By Florida Division Kay Hodgkins, CAP Annual Meeting (FDAM), I’ve been thinking about how my perspective has changed since I was first encouraged to attend. I just began my second year with the Lakeland Chapter, picking up first as fill-in for Secretary, and then being the Secretary. I transition in July to the Treasurer position. Members who served as leaders in the Chapter encouraged us all to attend FDAM if possible. I really felt that unless I was looking for socializing with members from other chapters, it would not be worth the investment of time and money. I received additional encouragement to attend. I was still apprehensive that I would not have earned a passing score on the Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) Exam, and felt embarrassed, but decided to register. It was a great relief to receive my passing report the day before FDAM began! I was very impressed with the professionalism of the Florida Division officers and members, and with the orchestration of the FDAM by the Lake Buena Vista Chapter. All materials were provided at registration, including name tags with a special “First Timer” ribbon for those of us who had not previously attended. I really appreciated the other attendees from our Chapter who “held my hand” through the entire meeting. Kim, MJ, and Susan were great about answering my questions, introducing me to other attendees, and giving me background information which helped me understand the people and the processes. I was made to feel welcome and included by both Lakeland Chapter members and other Division members. The business portions of FDAM proceeded professionally and efficiently. While I am sure the candidates for Division offices who were not elected were disappointed, they graciously congratulated the newly-elected officers, who were also courteous. Both speakers, Judi Moreo and Chuck Tompkins, were excellent. I learned a great deal from them which will be helpful on both personal and professional levels. The Florida Division Annual Meeting was truly a great investment. I know more about the Florida Division and IAAP than I did last week, and am impressed. I made great connections with Florida Division members whom I might not have otherwise met, and look forward to continuing those relationships. FDAM has revived my professionalism and my attitude. I hope to be able to attend every year.

Travel Tips: 1) Plan Ahead 2) Capture information 3) Keep it organized Use a Weekly Organizer as your trip file. A trip file that travels with you eases much of the stress of traveling. Important documents are easily available while away, and a record of expenses is handy after you return. Place documents in a pocket divider for the day of the week you will need them. Keep tickets, lodging and rental documents in pockets for the days you will be traveling. Put expense receipts in the pocket for the day you receive them. 4
