The World’s Leading Soil Surfactant Scientifically balancing air and water for a more consistent growing environment.
It’s no surprise that Revolution is trusted by so many turf professionals around the world. It’s the only soil surfactant technology that goes beyond water repellency issues, providing comprehensive water management and plant health benefits as well. Revolution’s patented formulation creates a thin continuous film of water in the soil profile, balancing air-to-water ratios and increasing the performance of turf under stress. It maximizes the potential of the growing environment, allowing your turf to function more efficiently and perform at consistently higher levels. This reduces the impact of daily stresses on turf health, and promotes quicker recovery when stresses occur. Try it this season and see the benefits for yourself.
The world’s leading soil surfactant.
Building Healthy Turf from the Ground Up
Building healthy turf is much like building a house – without a strong and stable base to support it, everything on top becomes more susceptible to structural damage. When it comes to growing great turf, your soil is where it all starts. If the turf’s supporting environment is not functioning at its best, neither can your turf. Revolution helps you build healthy turf from the ground up. It works to stabilize water movement throughout the soil profile, helping you more effectively manage soil moisture and more fully utilize the soil’s capacity for water distribution and storage. Revolution provides the foundational support your turf needs to reach its fullest potential.
Essential building blocks Water and air are essential in the foundation of turf health, and the balance of these components in the rootzone is a determining factor in how efficient photosynthesis can be. Revolution’s unique mode of action promotes better moisture access and gas exchange in the rootzone, protecting plant health and making it much more resilient under all types of stress.
Cornerstones of a Healthy Plant • Sunlight • Nutrients
• Water • Air
Revolution improves access to 75% of the cornerstone needs for healthy turf!
Revolution keeps water moving consistently through the profile, providing plant roots with more reliable moisture access. This enables the plant to photosynthesize more effectively, allowing the plant to make and store greater levels of carbohydrates for use during periods of stress. Unlike older generation surfactants, Revolution holds water more closely to the soil particle in a thin film – leaving plenty of room in soil pore spaces for air as well. Proper oxygenation of your soil not only supports healthy roots and aids in respiration, but may also play a role in protecting your turf against root-targeting pathogens. Managing your turf with Revolution also boosts the efficiency of other cellular processes. Studies show that Revolution-treated turf has higher protective antioxidant levels, cools itself more effectively through evapotranspiration, and exhibits better leaf turgor for more consistent play.
Engineered for Performance
Revolution’s patented formulation is designed to take your rootzone moisture management to a new level, creating a more consistent growing environment for high-performance turf. The key to Revolution’s success is its unique methyl-capped structure, which allows it to align closer to the soil particle and create an interlocking layer of hydration sites across the entire particle surface. This ensures that the water distribution characteristics more closely match that of an optimally wettable soil – with a thin continuous film of water and plenty of air. Revolution’s unique methyl-capped structure is also highly water soluble, ensuring hassle-free application and even distribution in the soil. Other capped formulations, such as those utilizing stearic acid caps, do not mix easily with water, leading to inconsistent wetting patterns and a disruption in water distribution.

What makes Revolution so different? It’s all in the methyl caps. These patented caps keep the surfactant molecule pressed against the soil particle. It holds water in a way that closely resembles the hydration characteristics of an optimally wettable soil, and does not hold excess water in soil pores which may inhibit proper oxygenation.
Optimizing Soil Moisture
Every season brings new challenges, and you never know what nature will have in store for you. Whether you end up with too much rain or too little, Revolution can help you quickly regain balance in the rootzone to promote healthy, resilient turf and produce drier, firmer playing surfaces. Revolution’s patented molecular structure attaches to soil particles better than any other soil surfactant on the market today. It allows water to move in a thin, continuous film through the soil, overcoming the inefficiencies of soil water repellency and preferential flow and providing highly consistent moisture and air levels throughout the rootzone. Because Revolution attaches much more closely to the soil particle than conventional surfactants, it also enhances natural capillarity for more effective vertical and lateral movement of water in the rootzone. As moisture in the upper regions of the soil is used, Revolution’s unique network of interlocking hydration sites allows water at lower levels to move upward more easily to supply your turf with the moisture it needs. By helping moisture distribute more easily upward, downward and laterally, Revolution balances air and water in the profile and promotes more effective drainage for firmer playing surfaces.
Revolution’s not just for the dry season. It helps move water during excessively wet conditions, too. During a very rainy 2009, Revolution was tested against a conventional surfactant and a control. Plots treated with Revolution had significantly lower soil moisture levels in the upper three inches of the profile on every sampling date.

Better Play in Wet or Dry Conditions
Keep Moisture Levels Uniform Research results from Dr. Doug Karcher at the University of Arkansas show Revolution’s superior water and air management in action, providing more uniform soil moisture under a wide variety of conditions. When more water than necessary was applied, the Revolution treated plots had lower, more favorable soil moisture levels while the untreated plots’ moisture levels were excessively high (a). When drought conditions were imposed, Revolution retained optimal levels of moisture in the treated plots while the untreated plots dried below acceptable levels (b).

Volumetric Water Content
(a)
Revolution provides remarkably uniform soil moisture from the surface down through the profile, as well as across the topography of your greens. As a result, low areas aren’t as wet, and high areas and slopes aren’t as dry.
Revolution gives you the ability to reduce irrigation frequency and increase irrigation run times without sacrificing playability, as well as significantly reducing the need to hand water in between irrigation or rainfall events.
Maintaining Moisture Within Specifications Revolution maintains soil moisture in a tighter distribution range that falls within the specifications for USGA rootzone mixes. While the reverse block co-polymer (a commonly used surfactant chemistry) improved moisture uniformity over the control, it still exhibited soil moisture content in some areas that would be considered too wet in a native sandy soil. (University of Wageningen)
Drier, Firmer Putting Surfaces Water content at and near the soil surface is a critical part of how putting greens perform. Too much water can leave greens soft and susceptible to ball marks, foot printing, etc.; using too little water may provide a firmer surface, but can also put your turf under substantial stress. Moisture must be maintained at optimal levels to provide a consistent putting surface, and Revolution can help you achieve that goal.

Better Moisture Means Healthier Plants
The Picture of Health A superintendent decided to find out what Revolution really did for his turf. He placed a piece of plywood on an area of the green, so this area would be left untreated when Revolution was sprayed. The corners were marked with red paint so the plywood could be placed in the same spot for every Revolution application. The plywood was removed after spraying, and that spot was managed the same as the rest of the green in every other way. This is what he saw at the end of the season. Impressed? He certainly was.
“In testing at Virginia Tech, Revolution has proven to have significant beneficial effects as both a soil surfactant and as a tool to manage plant health and plant stress. Revolution delivered greater moisture availability in drought stress conditions. This resulted in significantly reduced wilting, significantly higher leaf tissue anti-oxidant levels, significantly higher chlorophyll levels and significantly higher levels of sustained photosynthesis. Turf treated with Revolution had less damage under stressful growing conditions as it was able to increase (up-regulate) natural defense mechanisms and recover faster.”
Erik Ervin, Virginia Tech, 2011
Staying on Top of Sloped Areas A study by Michigan State University tested the efficacy of Revolution on moisture extremes in high and low area of a sloping green. On every sampling date, TDR readings at a 3-inch depth showed that treatment with Revolution resulted in a significant improvement in moisture levels when compared to the contol. Revolution provides exceptional moisture management, promoting better turf health from top to bottom.

Improved Root Growth Revolution gets to the root of water management issues. Literally. A healthy plant requires a healthy root system, and having too much or too little water can restrict root formation. By providing an optimal balance of air and water in the soil, Revolution encourages uniform root growth and a strong foundation for turf survival. Studies conducted in Japan show that turf treated with Revolution develops healthier root systems.
In studies conducted both in the US and abroad Revolution contributed to the formation of healthier, better developed roots than turf grown under the same conditions with either no treatment or treatment with another surfactant.
A study conducted at Stockdale Country Club in California yielded similar results.

Managing Stress and Disease
Balancing soil moisture is not only important for overall plant health, it’s also essential for suppressing and preventing many diseases. Too much water in the soil gives pathogens a place to breed and survive; too little water stresses the plant and leaves it susceptible to attack by opportunistic diseases such as Anthracnose. Revolution moves water off the surface and promotes balanced air and water in the soil profile. This keeps plants healthier so that they can better defend themselves against stress and stress-related disease. •

While stress-related diseases often occur in turf experiencing summer decline, pathogens are not the primary cause. As temperatures increase, the turf has to work harder to maintain regular functions. This leaves turf in a weakened state where it is less able to fight off pathogens.

Watering In
• Revolution is safe for turfgrass and does not need to be watered in immediately after application. However, since Revolution’s area of activity includes both the thatch/mat layer and the soil, it must be watered in sufficiently to deliver the Revolution molecules to a depth of at least four inches (10 cm).
Apply Revolution at 6oz/1000 ft (190 mL/100 m2)
2
Following an initial application of 6oz/1000 ft2 (190 mL/100 m2), Revolution can be applied bi-weekly at 3 oz/1000 ft2 (95 mL/100 m2).
• This requires about one third of an inch (.84 cm) of water on high sand rootzones or other soils with a sand top-dressing layer of four inches (10 cm) or more. On non-sand soils or “push-up” greens with less than a four inch (10 cm) sand topdressing layer, apply up to one half inch (1.17 cm) of water. • Revolution should be watered in thoroughly the evening following application, and should not be syringed in after application.
