Context: During the time that Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness there is a sense of Satan being on the offense as the aggressor and Jesus being on the defense (though victorious). Afterward Jesus is strengthened by angels just showing how weakened he was by the experience. But now in our text for today, focus on how Jesus comes on the offensive. Read Matthew 4:12-17 1. Why do you think Jesus picked Galilee to begin his ministry rather than the more religiously prestigious area of Judea and Jerusalem? 2. What is the meaning of Jesus’ message: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near?” Read Matthew 4:18-22 3. What was it about Jesus that you think compelled Peter and Andrew and James and John to leave their jobs and family to follow Jesus? 4. Jesus said, “Come follow me.” What did Jesus mean by that? 5. Jesus said, “I will make you fishers of men.” What did that mean? 6. How would you have responded to Jesus do you think? Read Matthew 4:23-25 7. Jesus came preaching the “good news of the kingdom”. How was it good news? 8. What is the significance of Jesus’ miracles of healing and casting out demons? 9. Jesus met both spiritual and physical needs. What do you need Jesus to do for you personally right now?
Week 5 – Scripture Readings In the readings for this week the focus is on the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God was THE central message of Jesus. He proclaimed it in his actions of healing and he also revealed the mystery of the Kingdom through parables. The Kingdom came in a way that people of that time did not expect. Jesus uses parables to help explain this difficult paradigm shift for the people. 2/10 2/11 2/12 2/13 2/14 2/15
