Theta Phi Alpha Mourns the Loss of Sister Emeritus, Ruth Thompson

BAY VILLAGE, OH – With great sadness, Theta Phi Alpha announces the passing of Sister Emeritus, Ruth Thompson as she entered the eternal chapter on July 20, 2015. Ruth was a great leader and passionate volunteer who began her membership as a 1938 initiate of Pi Lambda Sigma and then merged in 1952 with the Theta Phi Alpha Epsilon Chapter (University of Cincinnati). From 1954-1958 Ruth served as the Director of Extension, during which time she played an integral role in establishing the Epsilon Chapter House at the University of Cincinnati. In 1958 Ruth became Province Governor and then from 1962-1966 she held the position of National 2nd Vice President. Ruth sat on the Board of Trustees from 1966-1978 and then served as a National Panhellenic Conference Delegate from 1978-2002. She continued to share her leadership abilities as a member of the Extension University Research Committee from 2002-2003 and in 2008 she was named a Sister Emeritus. Ruth was the 35th recipient of the Guard of Honor, awarded in 1962 in recognition of her tremendous service to the Fraternity. This honor is the highest award Theta Phi Alpha can bestow upon an individual member. In 2012, Ruth attended her last convention alongside three of her daughters who are Theta Phi Alpha legacies. Ruth’s daughter described Theta Phi Alpha as Ruth’s “Walden Pond”. The Fraternity's deepest condolences are sent to all of Ruth’s family and friends. The visitation will be held on Saturday, July 25, at St. John the Baptist Church, Dry Ridge Rd., Cincinnati, Ohio from 8:30 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Condolences may be expressed at www.frederickfh.com. Donations may be sent to The Ben Kelhoffer Foundation, P.O. Box 531234, Cincinnati, Ohio 45421. ###
