T HIR D T I M E ’ S A C H A RM Phrases like “Third time lucky” and “Third time’s a charm” are common in our culture. I’m not certain of their origin or intended meaning. Do people mean to communicate that persistence is a key ingredient for success? Kind of a “If at first you don’t succeed, try...try again.” (Wow! Even that phrase suggests three attempts.) Or are they implying that there is something mystical about the number three? Some biblical numerologist would believe that to be the case. Me? I’m just trying to use a familiar phrase to announce that two Wesleyan churches in Florida are partnering with HFM for the third time to increase their missionary giving. In 2010, and again in 2012, Faith Wesleyan (Lakeland, FL) and Park Place Wesleyan (Pinellas Park, FL) joined forces to renovate a HFM house. Actually, the former provided the investment capital to purchase the a property and the latter provided the volunteer workforce to do the construction. Together, they generated over $40,000 for missions. Now they are to do it for a third time, this time to support a church plant in the Tampa Bay area led by Pastor Shawn and Noelle Clark. Nightlight Church is a true missionary effort to the clientele of the clubs and pubs of Ybor. Their vision is clear; seeing lives transformed in the club/bar scene by the love of Jesus. Their meeting place is ideal; a popular bar that normally serves cocktails and pizza. Their plan is powerful; love God with everything you’ve got, love everyone with the love God gives and then go make disciples of Jesus because you love God and people! As a former church planter, I can testify to the importance of having financial backing from the broader Christian community when launching a new congregation. It can be expensive! If you are targeting unchurched individuals, those that attend the gatherings will lend little financial support initially. I suppose this is true of most missionary efforts whether they are in Europe, the 10/40 window or Ybor. That’s why Faith Wesleyan, Park Place Wesleyan and HFM are partnering with Nightlight Church. But we’re not the only ones. This past month a Christian businessman made the following offer to Habitat for Missions. “If God blesses my business in 2014, I will match the money generated by this HFM renovation for Nightlight Church up to $20,000 .” Looks like “third time’s a charm!”
