President's Message Hello,

Jon Meckley

It is hard to believe that we are almost half way done with another semester here at Penn State. We are taking the students to the Fakuma Injection Molding show in Germany. We are also touring a tool-shop in Switzerland. When you see the students at the November SPE meeting, please feel free to pick their brains about what they saw. They have a great opportunity to experience some new technology and should be able to bring it back to this area. I hope you enjoy this month’s presentation on polymer drying. I have had several experiences with materials that have been over-dried. It created havoc in processing and mechanical testing of the molded parts. Our speaker is going to have a hands-on demonstration of the measuring equipment. I look forward to seeing you at one of our meetings,

Jon

About Our Speakers

Fred Curren joined (AZI) Arizona Instrument LLC in 2004 where he worked in the plastics division for his first four years. During that time he helped expand the knowledge and understanding of moisture analysis in plastics both internally and to those in the plastics industry. He helped standardize the moisture measurement parameters used in the company’s Computrac line of moisture analyzers for plastics. These settings can be found in ASTM D6980-04 Determination of Moisture in Plastics by Loss in Weight, Annex 1, Table A1.1 , and D7191-05 Determination of Moisture in Plastics by Relative Humidity Sensor, Annex X1, Table, X1.1. In 2008 Fred took over as the International Sales Manager for Latin America and the U.K. where he now trains AZI’s distributors on the Computrac and Jerome product lines. Arizona Instrument LLC

September Meeting Highlights 4

Penn State Student Chapter News by Tim Farrell I would like to first welcome back all of the returning Plastics Engineering Technology (PLET) students and welcome any incoming freshmen into the program. My name is Tim Farrell ([email protected]) and I am the newly elected President of Behrend’s student chapter of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE). I would also like to introduce Mr. Lou Grenci as the new Vice President, Miss Jessica Patz as the returning Treasurer, and lastly Mr. Craig Hugel as they new Secretary. It is still early in the semester but we are working hard to plan as many activities as possible to give PLET students from every class the opportunity to meet and have fun! In October we are planning several events. First of which is organizing a couple of PLET teams to participate in the intramural flag football league. Seeing as some of the seniors will be in Germany and Switzerland during Behrend’s league we were also considering holding our own flag football tournament. I would like this to include four teams, one for each of the PLET classes. Please email me if you are interested in participating in either of these activities.

Also before the weather becomes unbearable we would like to organize an ultimate Frisbee tournament. Most likely this will take place towards the end of October and again we would like to create teams for each PLET class and if you would like, please feel free to organize a team made up of students from several classes. If ultimate Frisbee sounds fun to you please send me and email letting me know you are interested. We all know how the weather can be during the fall in Erie and if it does take an early turn for the worse we plan to use bowling as our back up activity for October. I am very excited to be President this year and am look forward to getting the chance to meet everyone. It would be really great if all of you could take the time to email me. This email will serve several purposes. First it will give me the opportunity to compile an email list for all PLET students and it will give you the chance to introduce yourself and let me know of any suggestions you might have for PLET activities. I hope everyone is having a great semester thus far and is as excited as I am to have a school year full of events that will give us an opportunity to network and have fun!

NWPA SPE was a local sponsor of the 2009 Society of Plastics Engineers 14th Annual International Essay Contest winning Essay

"Wonder of Plastics" titled "Impact of Plastics on Society" was written by Graham Stewart, a junior at McDowell High School. Graham's essay was sponsored by his Honors Chemistry teacher, Ms. Miller Plastics are a pervasive and essential part of many aspects of modern society. Plastics are used in a myriad of applications worldwide. Plastics are affordable, adaptable, and easily produced which makes them the best choice in a plethora of applications. Plastics are used in everything form a milk container to the refrigerator that it is kept in and encompasses all aspects of modern society. Plastics have a set of superior characteristics that lend to their importance and impact. It is difficult to imagine a world devoid of the wonders of plastics. Is it even possible for a modern world to exist without the use of plastics? Polymers are the building blocks of the world, from DNA and RNA to plastics they serve as a structure to build the future. Plastics shape the modern world almost as strongly as DNA shapes us. Plastics are used in such a variety of applications that is unfathomable how not long ago the world was devoid of this wonder. Plastics are perhaps one of the most underappreciated materials on the planet. Diamonds are renowned for their beauty and value; however, they have a similar polymer to that found in plastics. The actual usefulness of a diamond especially in consideration of its price and rarity pales in comparison to the affordability and unparalleled applications of plastics.

Plastics have shaped society in so many ways that it is hard to imagine a different substance to replace all of the applications of plastics. From the cheap pen in someone’s pocket to the expensive cell phone adjacent it is hard to imagine either without being made of plastic. Plastic can be molded into any shape, color, or size and can be purchased affordably without a detriment to the environment. There are so many applications of plastics that it would be impossible to count the applications that a person sees everyday made from plastic. It is important also to think of all the plastics that are used but unnoticed and forgotten, such as the contact lenses, the hearing aid, or the wheelchair that people cannot live without. The reason that plastic is so prevalent and important is due to its inherent characteristics. Plastic is strong and light weight which is so important for almost any application. Plastics can be produced in any shape or texture, which is why it is so easily adaptable to various applications. Plastics can be thin and flexible or thick and sturdy depending on what is needed. Plastics are also one of the most easily recyclable renewable resources on the planet. Try to picture a world without plastics. For instance, imagine a sports fan watching his favorite hockey team play through the sturdy Plexiglas in front of him watching the players skate on their lighter than air plastic based skates, while sitting in his stain-proof ergonomically molded plastic seat in his teams colors, while Ashland is North America’s leading distributor of sipping his eight dollar beer, from his ten thermoplastic materials. Our supply chain includes cent, thin plastic recyclable cup. None of this the world’s leading plastics producers. could be possible without the adaptability and reliability of plastics. Plastics make things cheaper and easier as well. For example, it takes seven trucks filled with paper bags to contain the same amount, as are in found in one truck of recyclable plastic grocery bags.
