Timber Ceiling Blade Installation & Care

Timber Ceiling Blade Installation

Tile edge profiles are designed to capture either 15mm or 24mm ceiling grid profiles. Tiles can be fitted and removed from ceiling grids quickly Proprietary ceiling grid systems are supplied by others. Unika Vaev recommends black ceiling grid finish color to best compliment ecoustic® Timber Ceiling Blades. The total weight per m2 of all ecoustic® Timber Ceiling Blades is within the maximum weight rating of most proprietary grid systems installed within the US. New ceiling grids must be installed to comply with manufacturers specifications. When using existing ceiling tile grids Installers must confirm the structural adequacy of the grid, and install additional grid hangers as required to meet structural engineers specifications. Structural engineers safety certification must be confirmed for all overhead installations. • 23.6” x 23.6” tiles: 8 Timber Ceiling Blades per box • 23.6” x 47.2” tiles: 4 Timber Ceiling Blades per box

• Measure the edge triangular tiles on site, and cut the Blade Ceiling Tile + Scrim fabric over the blades as needed to align the hypotenuse of the triangle shape. • Cut a rebate in the hypotenuse of the tile blades, such that the rebate height will align the level of blade tile carrier rails, and the rebate width will align the edge of intended Blade tile hypotenuse support (wall angle or ceiling grid). • Check tolerances and apply desired finish to the cut timber surfaces. • Please note: It may be necessary to provide additional support to any blades no longer supported by carry rails. This could be achieved from above the scrim fabric via mechanical fasteners through discarded sections of carry rail or similar.

Timber Ceiling Blade Installation T-Bars: • Unika Vaev recommends a structural engineer is consulted in regards to the structural adequacy of all overhead constructions including ceiling grids- prior to the issue of an occupation certificate for every project. All architectural plans include a reference to the need for a structural engineers safety certificate to be certified for all overhead structures; either within the written specification, or on the schematic plans,- or both. This specification is common practice throughout architectural consultancies, and is also academically recommended to interior design professionals. • The weight of the timber blade tiles shown as ‘available’ within current availability guidelines is less than the weight guidelines published by most ceiling grid manufacturers. If the grid is installed to comply with manufacturers specifications, the blade tiles should not overload the ceiling grid. Ceiling contractors familiar with typical ceiling grid installations should be able to assess the consistency of existing grids in consultation with a structural engineer. Integration of lighting and mechanical: Since the blades are solid wood it should be relatively straightforward to fabricate apertures within the blades to accommodate services. Recommended best practice: • Locate apertures within areas of the tiles between the black aluminum hanging rails, to ensure that rails are located either side of the aperture. • Black fabric scrim can be cut with a surgical style (eg ‘Stanley’) knife or similar. • Drill or cut from the exposed bottom face of the tile toward the concealed upper face, to reduce the possibility of exposing any chipped surface. • Care should also be directed toward isolation of the blades (& attached ceiling grid) from any vibrating mechanical service to avoid unnecessary noise. This could be achieved via an absorptive gasket or membrane (eg cork or rubber). • It is possible to mount air-conditioning outlets to the blade system- assuming the scrim is removed- however this is not recommended, and consideration must be given to the resulting reduced air flow- as the blades will typically obstruct >50% of the duct opening.

Timber Ceiling Blade Care • The Timber Blades and Panels are a natural material and the lifespan of our coatings will vary depending on the application, situation, and installation. • Maintenance of the ecoustic® Timber Ceiling Blades and wall Panels varies according to the coating and the application. ecoustic® Timber Ceiling Blades and wall Panels are pre-finished in internal grade coatings, periodic dusting should keep the panels looking their best. • Should the blades or panels require cleaning, we recommend wiping the panels down with a clean damp cloth. If the blades or panels are subjected to any moisture, please wipe them down immediately. Internal blades and panels should NOT be wet down or hosed, as this will negatively impact the coating. • Blades and panels may be better cleaned with a soft brush and vacuum, taking care not to bruise the wood during the process.
