Its stores provide a selection of merchandise, including equine, livestock, pet, and animal products; hardware, truck, towing, and tool products; seasonal products comprising lawn and garden items; power equipment; maintenance products for agricultural and rural use; and work/ recreational clothing and footwear products. The company was founded in 1938 and is based in Brentwood, Tennessee.

Laurel is a city in Jones County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 18,393 although a significant population increase was reported following Hurricane Katrina.

As of December 29, 2012, it operated 1,176 stores in 45 states and employed approximately 9,400 people. The company focuses on supplying the lifestyle needs of recreational farmers and ranchers. The company also serves the maintenance needs of those who enjoy the rural lifestyle, as well as tradesmen and small businesses. Stores are located in towns outlying to major metropolitan markets and in rural communities.

Laurel is the principal city of the Laurel Micropolitan Statistical Area.
