Transforming the learning environment ONE step at a time Just over two years ago the Diocese of Sacramento’s ONE Campaign commenced with farreaching plans to revitalize the local church and deliver funding to vital program areas. Today, with $33.8 million pledged and nearly $5.8 million earmarked for education, grateful Catholic school leaders proceed purposefully yet prudently, transforming and enhancing student learning environments. "It’s all about student learning," says Laurie Power, associate superintendent and chief academic officer of Catholic schools, ever mindful of forging excellence in diocesan schools. She stresses the necessity of "staying a step ahead" of technology needs, and on top of the facility updates required for safety, comfort and aesthetics. To do so equates to optimal learning.
Technology grants “We asked for every school’s ‘due diligence’ with a technology grant application,” Laurie explains, detailing the importance of documenting how funds would be used and what steps would be taken to achieve that vision. A brief application, a copy of the school’s technology plan, and three supplier bids were required in order to secure the $15,000 technology grant. Nearly all of the $500,000 reserved for technology grants has been distributed. Each school studied and researched technology options, their school’s infrastructure and student learning needs. Cognizant of Bishop Jaime Soto’s goal for one device for every student by 2016 to enrich student learning, administrators thoughtfully assessed how to inch closer to a new reality of purposeful technology. “About 50 percent of K8 classrooms are on target to be onetoone environments by the end of this school year,” Laurie says, further distinguishing that “all students actually do have access to devices due to shared laptop carts that move between classrooms.” She acknowledges that it is an unfolding process and that some schools have had added challenges. But more important, confident in the progress, she knows that these technology tools engage students in a way that stimulates and fosters their critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity.
