This month has been very exciting. Christy Anana, one of our school counselor’s, had the unique opportunity to be recognized by Michele Obama as the Washington School Counselor of the year. This was one of Michele Obama’s last events as First Lady. Mrs. Anana represented our school, district and state extremely well. We are grateful for her service and dedication to our students. Another celebration was our Cultural Fair. This event was very well attended. Multiple staff members and Natural Leaders (parent helpers) volunteered their time to share their culture and heritage. We hope to make this an annual event. In continuing our work to be a culturally responsive school,

The HiCap (Highly Capable) Program The Highly Capable Student Program (HiCap) serves students throughout the Marysville School District at all grades, Kindergarten through grade 12. Services for students include, but are not limited to, support at their home school, transfer to a district program at Pinewood Elementary (grades 2 - 5 only), advanced math options (grades 7 & 8 only), a learning block focusing on Language Arts and Social Studies (middle school level) and consultation and coordination with counselors to ensure HiCap students are appropriately placed in the most rigorous courses available to them. To be considered for the HiCap program, students must go through the District’s application, assessment and placement process. Before parents start this process, they should consider whether the HiCap program is a good fit for their student. Start by discussing academic abilities and performance with your child’s teacher. We encourage parents to review the information contained in the Highly Capable Student Program brochure, which can be picked up in your school office, or by viewing online at our web site: h ttp://www.msd25.org/domain/88. To start placement consideration, parents must submit the Parent Permission for Student Assessment form by January 27th, 2017. The form is available online, in school offices, and at the Service Center. After the form is processed, the student will be scheduled for a Cognitive Abilities (CogAT) assessment in late February or early March. A Review Panel will make placement decisions in April, which will take effect for the 2017-2018 school year. For additional information, parents are welcome to contact the HiCap Office at (360) 965-0402 or e-mail the Program Secretary, Karen Davis, at
