Turners Martial Arts Studios Newsletter – August 2015
The Changing Seasons Well, as we’re stuck in the middle of the August heat, we find ourselves praying for a change. Funny how that works sometimes. Not that long ago we wanted things to warm up. Then we wanted some rain. Remember how that worked out? Then we sure wanted the rain to stop. The point is, the cycle of change surrounds us at all times and affects far more than just the weather. Change is simply one of the constants of Life!
Staffing As the summer draws to a close, lots of change happens. In our case, several of our Junior Instructors are all leaving to go off to college. Miss Taylor Cole is off to UT in San Antonio. Miss Anna Edwards is going to UT Dallas. Mister Brandon Whitmore is headed to Sam Houston State in Huntsville. We’ve seen some great leaders come through here, go off to college and then into the marketplace. We are extremely proud to be a part of that! We certainly want to wish all good things to these fine young people that have given so much of themselves to our school and to our students. They will be sorely missed but, we know it’s a natural part of the cycle of change. With them moving off to start their respective college futures, we want to celebrate the new staff that will be replacing them. Starting the week of August 10th, Mr. Logan Wolkow and Mr. Nathan Edwards will be stepping in to the role of Junior Instructors. Their efforts will be most welcome to help us groom the upcoming generations of future Black Belts. Hopefully, we will get to enjoy their contributions for a couple of more years before change takes them from us as well. Please take a moment to congratulate them and welcome them into their new roles. This year however, these are not the only changes impacting us. It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that knows Mister BJ Turner that he absolutely LOVES the grappling arts! While he has been diligently training in Wrestling, MMA and various forms of JuJitsu for many years, he really started getting serious about Brazilian JuJitsu (BJJ) in the last couple of years. His passion for the art led to him being offered a position as Program Director for the Gracie Gym in Plano, which he has decided to accept. It is obviously with mixed emotions that we will be watching him leave us at the end of August. He wanted to stay and see everyone through their Belt Tests at the end of the month. Though we hate to see him leave the family business, he is off to blaze his own trail rather than follow in our footsteps. We appreciate his contributions here and wish him great success in the BJJ world. With that happening, you’ll see Mister VanDolah more involved with the late night Adult classes. Also, Master Turner will be adjusting his clinic hours to be more available and active on the mat here at the Studio. He is excited about that too!
Scheduling We’ve been reviewing class attendance logs over the past months to determine how well we’re serving you, our customers. Based on actual attendance data, we will be modifying our schedule for the Fall, starting in September. I know this is coming up quickly and new schedules will be out this week and posted online in the Member Website. Some of the key changes are designed to simplify the schedule. For example, all classes will start on the hour or half hour, no more 4:45, 6:15, etc.; classes on Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday will be virtually identical; classes on Friday and Saturday will be slightly modified to accommodate the attendance level on those days. Multiple options will be available for choosing to take classes early or late, as needed. A BIG part of the scheduling change is that American Karate classes will be getting extended to 1 hour each for ALL levels and you will be able to attend UNLIMITED classes.
Classes and Programs In reviewing all that attendance data mentioned above, there were several things that stood out as needing change. We love to teach martial arts but, we’re very aware that we’re running a business and that efficiency counts. Some classes just weren’t filling up enough to be efficient. With that in mind, we’ll be cancelling both Fitness Kickboxing and Grappling Club effective September 1st. Honestly, that frees up some calendar time slots for other core classes. Specifically, we’ll be moving the Adult class up to a 7:30-8:30pm timeslot. Also, we are in talks with Master Meers to see if he’d like to continue a JuJitsu program in lieu of the Grappling Club, or even continue a similar format. More on that later. As a Special Offer for our current Fitness Kickboxing students, you may enroll in the American Karate program on the Introductory Special and receive an additional $100 OFF. That’s Only $249 for the entire Fall Trimester, including your full uniform and Belt Test! This is a great way to continue your fitness training and increase your self-defense skills. We are also looking at what other type of classes we could offer during the daytime that would be of interest. Any feedback and suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Fall Enrollment Enrollment for the FALL 2015 Trimester is Now Open! Bring A Friend In addition to our normal Introductory Specials, we will be offering an additional $50 OFF for you AND a friend IF YOU BOTH SIGN UP! We are also doing a Special for Lil’ Dragons. Bring a Friend to sign up with you and the price is Only $99 for BOTH! Referrals We appreciate the strong referrals we already get from our current students and ask you to please keep them coming! For a little extra incentive, if they mention you referred them we’ll give them $50 OFF their initial sign-up and apply a $10 credit to your next month’s tuition as a Thank You!
