Af te r l i v i n g i n t h e i r h o u s e f o r over thirty years, this “empty nest” couple dec i d e d i t w a s t i m e t o “ f r e s h en up” their 1980’s ranch style dwe lling. The own e r s d i d n o t h a v e p r e c o n c eived ideas or specific programmatic goals, but i n s t e a d w e r e o p e n m i n d e d and requested design solutions potentially vary i n g i n s c o p e . The o w n e r s o r i g i n a l l y b u i l t this house, located in Potomac, Maryland, to a c c o m m o d a t e t h e i r y o u n g family. The house underwent a series of reno v a t i o n s a n d a d d i t i o n s o v er thirty years, adjusting to varying needs and cha n g i n g f am i l y d y n a m i c s . Although these alterations ser ved the family wel l , t h e n um e r o u s c h a n g e s were not stylistically coherent or consistent in t h e i r a r c h i t e c t u r a l d e t a i l s . The generally dark existing house retained a com p a r t m e n t a l i z e d k i t c h e n a nd failed to take advantage of views toward the w o o d e d p a r k l a n d j u s t b e y ond the property. This m o s t r e c e n t r e n o v a t i o n attempts to better organize th e house, pro v i d e a m o r e o p e n f l o o r p lan, infuse the house with natural light and focu s v i e w s t o w a r d t h e w o o d l ands. The desire was to create a new scheme that w a s u p d a t e d , c o m p r e h e nsive and unified while adding minimal square foot a g e . T h e a d d i t i o n a l s p a c e allows a home office to be relocated from the b a s e m e n t . W i t h h i g h c e i l i ngs and an abundance of glass, this space is orie n t e d t o t a ke a d v a n t a g e o f the wooded views. The kitchen is reoriented, enla r g e d , a n d o p e n s u p t o a dining space, living room and views of the land s c a p e . T h e m a s t e r b edroom and bathroom are repositioned to max i m i z e o r i e n t a t i o n t o w a r d the views and reorganized to facilitate daily rout i n e s . I n t e r i o r f i n i s h e s , i ncluding Wenge flooring and rif t-sawn oak mill w o r k , a r e i n t e n d e d t o u n i f y and enrich the interior spaces. Detailing is min i m a l a n d c r i s p , a l l o w i n g n atural light and views to take center stage. W it h t h e i r s t r o n g e m o t i o n a l t i es and an affinity for the house developed over thir t y y e a r s , t h e r e d e s i g n b e came a balancing act between retaining the orig i n a l h o u s e w h i l e u p d a t i n g it for the next chapters in this family ’s lives. The r e d e s i g n a l l o w s t h e o r i ginal ranch house, with its strong horizontal pre s e n c e , t o a n c h o r a s e r i e s of vertical volumes that enrich the house with ligh t a n d o p t i m a l v i e w s t o t h e landscape beyond.
