2016-17 UAB MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES

LEAGUE CHAMPIONS The UAB men’s basketball team was selected as the preseason favorite to win the conference in a vote by league’s head coaches. UAB returns four starters from a 2015-16 squad that won Conference USA by four games with a 16-2 record in league play. Overall, the Blazers finished 26-7 and earned the program’s 12th NIT appearance. The Blazers earned 10 of a possible 14 first-place votes. Individually, juniors William Lee and Chris Cokley were tabbed to the C-USA Preseason All-Conference Team. TEAM CANADA UAB freshman Nate Darling helped Team Canada win a Silver Medal at the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Men’s Basketball Championship. Darling and Team Canada posted victories over Argentina (92-58), the Dominican Republic (87-74), Brazil (74-58) and Puerto Rico (8366) to reach the championship game against the United States. Darling averaged 1.8 points, 0.6 rebounds and hit three 3-pointers in 9.4 minutes per game. BLAZERS ARE BACK UAB returns all but one player from its 2016 Conference USA regular-season championship team. Among the 11 returners are four starters, led by juniors Chris Cokley, William Lee and Nick Norton. Cokley was named to the All-Conference USA Second Team last season, while Lee and Norton both earned All-Conference USA Third Team accolades. Additionally, Lee was selected as the 2016 C-USA Defensive Player of the Year and secured a spot on the league’s all-defensive team. UAB also returns 2016 Conference USA Sixth Man of the Year Dirk Williams. Overall, the Blazers return 82.3 percent of their scoring and 92.8 percent of their rebounding. UAB INKS THREE Blazer head coach Robert Ehsan signed his first three recruits of his career earlier this month when Zack Bryant (Hastings, Fla.), Makhtar Gueye (Dakar, Senegal) and Luis Hurtado (Weston, Fla.) signed their National Letters of Intent to play at UAB. Bryant averaged 19.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists last season at Providence School in Jacksonville. He also broke current Duke guard and Providence School alumni Grayson Allen’s single-season scoring record. Gueye plays at Aspire Basketball Academy in Arizona and averages 19.8 points and 9.5 rebounds this season. Hurtado is a three-star recruit according to 247Sports.

UAB BLAZER BASKETBALL | 2016-17 BLOCK CITY UAB transformed Birmingham into Blockingham last season by finishing the year ranked second in the NCAA with 6.1 blocked shots per game. UAB ended the season with 202 blocks to record the sixth-most in the country. In addition, the 202 rejections were the highest single-season total in school history, surpassing the previous record of 187 set during the 1988-89 season. Individually, junior William Lee finished the season with 95 blocks and ranked eighth in the NCAA with 2.9 per game. Lee, who blocked at least one shot in all but one game, was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year while earning a spot on the All-Defensive Team as well. Lee’s 95 rejections rank as the second-most in school history for a single season. Only Alan Ogg had more single-season blocks than Lee when he tallied 129 during the 1988-89 season. ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS UAB turned in one of its greatest seasons in school history in 2015-16 en route to its first Conference USA regular-season championship since 2010-11 season. The Blazers finished the season with a 26-7 overall record and a 16-2 mark in league play. During the season, UAB set school records for overall wins, Conference USA wins, consecutive wins (14) and road wins (10). The Blazers would go on to earn a bid to the NIT to mark the 12th time in school history UAB has participated in the postseason tournament. ALL-CONFERENCE QUARTET UAB made school history at the end of the regular season when four of its student-athletes were named All-Conference USA. Blazers Robert Brown (first team), Chris Cokley (second team), William Lee (third team) and Nick Norton (third team) became the first UAB quartet to be named All-Conference USA in the same season, breaking the previous school record of three selections set during the 2010-11 season. The All-Conference USA teams were selected by a vote of the league’s coaches and a select panel of media representatives.

GAME NINE | STEPHEN F. AUSTIN | DECEMBER 7, 2016 SIX SHOOTER UAB sharp shooter Dirk Williams came off the bench last season to shoot 48.2 percent from the field, 38.4 percent from three-point range and 89.8 percent from the free throw line while averaging 9.3 points per game. For his efforts, Williams was selected as the 2016 Conference USA Sixth Man of the Year, making it two straight years in which a Blazer has won the award. Forward Chris Cokley won the award in 2015 as a freshman. In addition, Williams helped UAB to a 14-1 record when he scored in double figures. TRIPLES AND DIMES UAB finished the 2015-16 season with one of its best seasons in school history in total three-pointers made and total assists. 2016-17 BOX SCORES Game #4 | November 21, 2016 No. 5 Kansas 83, UAB 63 Josh Jackson has been huddling with the Kansas coaching staff since the start of the season, and the message has been the same: If you quit fouling so much, you would say on the floor more. Jackson poured in 22 points, while backcourt mates Frank Mason and Devonte Graham helped carry the load as fifth-ranked Kansas beat UAB 83-63 in the semifinals of the CBE Classic. Mason finished with 20 points and Graham had 16 for the Jayhawks (3-1), who advanced to play Georgia. Kansas raced to a big early lead, weathered several runs by UAB, then relied on their backcourt of Jackson, Mason and Graham to pull away from the Blazers down the stretch. Dirk Williams led the Blazers (2-2) with 13 points. Tyler Madison had 12. The Blazers got off to what looked like it would be a catastrophic start, turning the ball over seven times and missing their first 11 field-goal attempts. Their only points over the first 10 minutes came on foul shots, and by the time they finally hit the Jayhawks led 23-3. The Blazers took advantage with a run of their own. They ripped off a 17-2 run over the next 6 minutes as the Jayhawks missed seven straight shots of their own, and they quieted a partisan crowd by getting within 27-20 late in the half. Graham hit a 3-pointer with 5 seconds to go, but UAB went coast-to-coast for a buzzer-beating basket to deflate the Jayhawks. The teams resumed trading runs early in the second half before the Jayhawks began pulling, and four 3-pointers by Svi Mykhailiuk -- who finished with 15 points -- helped put the game out of reach. St. Mary’s is used to playing in the Orleans Arena every March, having been there annually since 2009 for the West Coast Conference Tournament. Due to scheduling conflicts, the 15th-ranked Gaels got an early season look at the venue, and earned a 76-63 victory over UAB. Jock Landale scored 20 points to lead No. 15 St. Mary’s (5-0). He was 9 of 11 from the field. In doing a much better job of not getting beat off the dribble, something Bennett was looking for in the Gaels’ stopover in Las Vegas, they did a good job of limiting UAB’s shot selection at key moments. The defensive stops allowed St. Mary’s to go on significant runs to keep the Blazers well behind. The Gaels outscored UAB 30-16 during a 14-minute stretch in the first half to open their largest lead of the game, 40-23. The Blazers wouldn’t go away, however, as they came out of the locker room and used a 16-7 run to cut the lead to seven, at 50-43 with 14:33 left. But the Gaels used a 13-3 run of their own, ignited by three consecutive 3-pointers, to push the lead back to double digits, at 63-46 with 9:29 remaining. Though it is just five games into the season, St. Mary’s looked in mid-season form for most of the game, with solid ball movement and noticeable chemistry the Blazers are still looking for without junior point guard Nick Norton, who was lost for the season with a torn ACL. Emmett Naar, Stefan Gonzalez and Calvin Hermanson each scored 12 points for the Gaels. They were 27 of 52 (.519) from the field, including 50 percent (13 of 26) from 3-point range. St. Mary’s also hit all nine of its free throws. Meanwhile, the Blazers continue to struggle without Norton, who came into his third year as a starter but was lost for the season 15 minutes into the season-opener. The Blazers shot 47 percent from the field, hitting 26 of 55, and were led by Chris Cokley, who had a season-high 20 points. Deion Lavender also had a season high with 12. Lee and Mehinti each blocked three shots as the Blazers (4-3) held Alabama A&M to 33-percent shooting, forcing

15 turnovers. The Blazers broke away from a 12-12 tie to go up 32-19 by halftime.

Quinterian McConico led the Bulldogs (0-6) with 15

points on 7-for-10 shooting. McConico also grabbed six boards, but A&M was out-rebounded 46-28.

UAB boosted its lead from 13 points to 20 during a brief span midway through the second half. Mehinti started the

run with a pair of free throws and ended it with a steal and a feed to Javien Williams for a dunk and a 52-32 lead. In between, Nate Darling added a 3-pointer.

UAB has now won 10 straight against Alabama A&M

Jared Harper scored 21 points and Danjel Purifoy added 16 to lead Auburn to a 74-70 victory over UAB. The young Tigers (6-1) proved capable of handling a hostile environment in their first true road game of the season, outlasting UAB (4-4) in front of the first sellout crowd at Bartow Arena since March 23, 2010. Auburn shot 50 percent from the field and outscored UAB 41-33 in the second half. The Tigers knocked down 11 3-pointers, the most since they made 13 in the season opener against North Florida, outscoring UAB 33-12 from beyond the arc. Harper torched the Blazers for 15 points on five 3-pointers in the first half, but the true freshman was forced to take a seat early in the second half with three fouls. Purifoy, the freshman forward who was tied with Mustapha Heron for the team lead in points per game entering the contest, stepped up in Harper’s absence. Purifoy scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half, including three of his four 3-pointers. Heron also asserted himself in the second half, scoring eight of his 11 points after the intermission. UAB had a 40-31 advantage on the boards, but Chris Cokley was forced out of the game with 8:24 remaining when he was called for a personal foul and subsequently drew a technical foul call for arguing with the referee. He finished with eight points and seven rebounds. William Lee led UAB with 13 points, and Hakeem Baxter added 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Auburn regained the lead, its first since the 13:29 mark in the first half, on a T.J. Dunans jumper with 13:34 remaining in the second half. The bucket came in the middle of a 14-2 run that gave Auburn the lead for good.
