In A ugust 1984, 30 clim bers, including four w om en, clim bed in the N evados de Q uim sachata, in Lauca N ational Park on the C hilean-B olivian border. A contango (6052 m eters, 19,855 feet) received its second, third and fourth ascents on A ugust 11, 1 2 and 13, 1984, C apurata (5990 m eters, 19,653 feet) its second on A ugust 12, G uallatiri, an active volcano, (6071 m eters, 19,918 feet) its fourth on A ugust 13
and U m arata (5717 m eters, 18,758 feet) its first and second on A ugust 13 and 14. The leader was Edm undo L agos. In 1985, two university groups were active in the sam e region. O n A ugust 4 , 1985, 37 m ountaineers from the Catholic U niversity o f Santiago, led by R enato C am podónico, crossed the frontier into Bolivia and placed a cam p on the slopes o f Sajam a (6520 or 6546 m eters, 21,391 or 21,463 feet). Twelve reached the sum m it, including Julieta M ery, one o f the first women to have clim bed the highest m ountain in B olivia. At the sam e time a U niversity o f Chile group o f 38, led by C laudio G álvez, cam ped below the frontier m assif o f Larancagua. On A ugust 5, 1985, 18 clim bers ascended Cerro G uaneguane (5100 m eters, 16,733 feet). O n the 7th, six m ade the first ascent o f N evado Larancagua (5433 m eters, 17,824) w hile six others m ade the first ascent o f N evado C ondoriri (c. 5250 m eters, 17,225 feet).
