UConn Postgame Notes With the victory over Cincinnati in the American Women’s Basketball Championship, UConn improved to 1000 since joining conference prior to the start of the 2013-14 season. It has won all four American Women’s Basketball Championships, and is 14-0 in this event. UConn (31-0) meets USF in American Women’s Basketball Championship final for the four straight year on Tuesday night. The Huskies are 25-0 against the Bulls. In the history of the program, UConn is now 81-13 in conference tournament play. The Huskies are also 28-2 in conference semifinals with 14 straight wins. UConn will be going for its 23 rd conference tournament championship. With the win over Cincinnati, the Huskies collected their fourth victory by at least 50 points in this tournament. No other team has a 50-point win. The 54-point margin of victory on Monday was the most lopsided since the final last year, when the Huskies beat USF by 56 points (100-44). UConn also racked up a 59point win (93-34) over the Bearcats in the 2015 quarterfinal. UConn’s fourth win by at least 50 came against ECU, 106-56, in the 2015 semifinal. UConn set new tournament defensive records by holding Cincinnati to the fewest points in a quarter (0), half (5) and game (21). Cincinnati’s eight field goals and 13.8 percent field goal shooting were also a new tournament lows. The points allowed in a quarter were also a program record. The old record was one point allowed in the second quarter at SMU on Feb 24th. The five points in a half matched the program record set against Fairleigh Dickinson on November 25th, 2011. Senior Gabby Williams (hip) did not play. She had appeared in 142 straight games. The Huskies were 141-1 in those games. Forward Napheesa Collier had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists. Collier went over 100 assists for the season. It was the 14th time in 15 games she has reached double figures and the 27 th time overall this season.
Azura Stevens led the Huskies with 21 points and 13 rebounds with four blocks, collecting her ninth doubledouble of the season. Junior Katie Lou Samuelson had six assists, giving her 100 for the season. She also had 11 points and seven rebounds. Cincinnati Postgame Notes This was the third time Cincinnati has been eliminated from the American Women’s Basketball Championship by UConn. The Bearcats lost in the quarterfinals in 2014 and 2015. Cincinnati (19-12) is in the midst of its best season since posting a 23-8 mark in 2002-03. That was the last Bearcat team to make a postseason tournament. It reached the second round of the WNIT before falling at Toledo. ###
