MODEL JOURNAL CARD. 10 March 20__ Today we spent most of the day walking beside Highway 79 on our way to Pine Bluff. It was cold and rainy, so we were both miserable and hungry. We stopped in the middle of the morning to eat but all our food had spoiled. I just had some water but Bob went ahead and ate some of the meat and got sick. Most of the rest of the day was spent with him throwing up so we didn’t get too far. We were just outside of Camden when I thought I heard some dogs barking. Bob and I climbed a tree to hide in and they never got any closer. We are so afraid but we don’t want to turn back. We know what will happen to us even if we turn ourselves in.
MODEL SAFE HOUSE CARD Safe House #1 Mr. and Mrs. Alton Schmidt live at 230 Talus St. in Precott, AR. They have been very active in their church group. Mr. Schmidt’s grandfather actually owned several slaves and it was through this experience that Alton came to realize that slavery was a terrible sin. Slaves are hidden in a hole dug underneath the floor of the chicken house. Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt are poor so they can’t provide much food. Just a bit of cornbread and some water. At least the slaves can rest in safety. When it’s time to leave Alton tells them to head toward Arkadelphia. He points out a trail that will lead them to I-30.
